It's both the same background image for AWN because it is unfortunely not possible to use different imanges for different panel instances.
This theme works not on all display resolutions and the shadow was drawn on the wallpaper.

There is no newer Ubuntu. All after this version is pure Bullshit.
But I use the pretty same configuration in Debian Squeeze and it works fine too.

Currently I'm testing Kubuntu 12.04 and it seems to be better as the last versions.
Debian and Ubuntu 10.04 is too old to run on my newer hardware at work.
My only problem is the ugly look of GTK apps in KDE. What a pitty that there is no bespin GTK engine.

My hardware is over three years old but it is more than compatible with Pangolin. The problem is I find Unity very unproductive. I have tested Kubuntu too, its cool and yes GTK apps looks bad. I'm addicted to Nautilus and Gthumb

Okay, but Dolphin is a good app for replacing Nautilus with it (I think it's much better than Nautilus). And Gwenview is a good alternative for gThumb.

Well, its a matter of tastes but I surely know that I depend on these gnome apps >> XaraLx (my main graphic tool), yarssr (my favourite rss app), Gcolor2. After all these (5) years with Gnome it would be very difficult to get used to Kde.
I have one year left to decide what I want to use in the future

Now I'm playing a little with qtcurve GTK engine in KDE and the result for the look of GTK apps is much better than with oxygen GTK engine.
Yes, I will also use the next year to find solution.
