The only problem is like most japanese cars that we use a lot of road salt in Finland and that eats the body of a car pretty fast if the rust protection has been ignored. If you don´t drive in winter that pretty much solves the problem but you have to get to work etc. and these things were made run everywhere pretty much.

Yup road salt definitely eats up any car, rust protection should be a priority even though it's costly. Plus it's fun to drive in Winter especially with a Subaru.

Its odd that the EU does not require the manufacturers to make those protections anymore. Because they want people to change to newer cars in like every 7 years or so which is just stupid.

The world is stupid and it's all about money, so gone are the good old days when car manufacturers never thought about making a huge profit and jumping through legal loop holes.

And the so called "green thinking"... A good and well maintained car runs decades before braking down. And everything goes to scrapyard after a few year because it pollutes too much. Maybe they think that making new cars doesn´t cost any resources

Thanks! ^^ That 2liter boxer sounds awesome and makes 270hp, some say that I´m mad causes I plan to drive it daily x) All it really needs is full set of brake pads(discs maybe need to measure), full oil service(engine, transmission etc), left front wishbone. And the back has some starting rust but its still can be prevented from spreading if I visit the paint shop in summer. I´ll start by getting rid of that stupid subwoofer in the back xD

Yeah It goes to waste if I do it and leave it to collect dust to some garage or backyard... And the more corners and worse the road is the better it feels to drive it The boost is just insane xD And if you don´t go full throttle all time the gas millage is  pretty tolerable. After this my -94 Celica feels like a moped :´D

NESkimo88 In reply to LahiruJ [2019-06-06 18:42:00 +0000 UTC]

Well Compared to the Impreza it feels lazy x) But yeah I like that Celica too, its fun to drive and it can go pretty fast if you want to. Even if its a sportier looking Corolla but the tech is bulletproof and the 3s-ge engine is pretty solid, no turbo you just rev high and it launches. Before that I drove a Audi A4 Quattro, still give it a spin now and then but the german engineering feels too sterile now... Also I hate the way those VAG machines are full parts made of plastic which when they start to fall apart are pain in the ass to replace and you only get them from "Marblecounter" and they cost a ton...

LahiruJ In reply to NESkimo88 [2019-06-07 01:27:39 +0000 UTC]

Yup comparatively it's cheaper and fun to drive Japanese sports cars than German counterparts. Some people go over the top when the start owning a Subaru by literally building the engine from the ground up with lightened parts and bigger turbos just to get the bragging rights but the car becomes highly unreliable after changing from stock.

Yeah the older Audis where great! My first car was a -88 Audi 100 But these newer once are... blaah... Two other cars I have fond memories: Saab 900 and Peugeot 309, damn I miss that little bastard xD I´m planning to keep that one pretty much stock.

Yeah, back then those where just cars but now these japs are becoming more of a hobby. And my friend has build 3 Subaru´s and he was like "I´m gone beat you good if you don´t take good care of this gem!" "Well you can probably teach me to get to know how." "That was my plan. I make you a list what you need. Roll it to my garage and prepare to get yourself dirty!" Has been pretty fun have to say. The only thing I don´t plan to do self is the bodywork and painting.

It's all about building, tuning, testing and repeating the process. It's the same with Evo's as well but I prefer the rumble noise of the Subaru more than the Evo.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NESkimo88 In reply to LahiruJ [2019-06-11 05:52:12 +0000 UTC]

There aren´t that many Evos running in Finland atleast. I don´t know how many there are but what I have seen in sale for half a year time. Asking prices start from 10k€ if they run. And even they all have pretty much problems with turbocharger or engine problems. I also like the sound of that boxer. The newer once don´t have that cause equal length exhaust...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LahiruJ In reply to NESkimo88 [2019-06-11 07:04:57 +0000 UTC]

Yup Evos are like that but if you find a factory stock clean Evo that hasn't been messed with it tends to work really well. Most of the time people ruin most cars by over-tuning and trying to get higher boost and more  horsepower. The beauty of owning the older model Subaru's with the factory deep boxer rumble is that when you do get pulled over by the cops, they find it difficult to fine you for the noise!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NESkimo88 In reply to LahiruJ [2019-06-11 21:45:26 +0000 UTC]

Its hard to find one that has not been ruined already... And its a bit too exotic for my taste. That´s why I plan to keep mine pretty much stock. We already have plans to upgrade the brakes, those once on it are pretty much useless. My friend was like "If your neighbors complain about the noise then I´m going to get you an anti-lag system" xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LahiruJ In reply to NESkimo88 [2019-06-12 01:53:45 +0000 UTC]

That's good to hear, upgrading the suspension can be added to your list as well since that would make you car handle far better than stock. Ooh wee get the anti-lag system for your neighbors sake.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NESkimo88 In reply to LahiruJ [2019-06-12 06:04:50 +0000 UTC]

It already has a adjustable suspension Not that pretty fancy ones this is around 1k€ price mark but it gets the job done. And the funniest part is the seller was not aware that it had one xD Well he did not have any idea what he was selling or I was scammed xD If I get the anti-lag it would be just for show, not that I would drive it on all time xD After the brake job the car is ready to go to the body shop.

I have some from my day at the garage... Need to do some editing but because work etc. Had to order a new set of wheel bolts. Those originals have been so hammered down with the pneumatic wrench(I always tighten mine by hand tools) that they don´t fit anymore, and I´m not destroying the fit by forcing them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LahiruJ In reply to NESkimo88 [2019-06-13 01:48:08 +0000 UTC]

The pneumatic wrench is notorious at damaging wheel bolts, I always end up replacing them on almost all the cars that I buy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NESkimo88 In reply to LahiruJ [2019-06-13 08:15:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, and at least in Finland you have to pay extra for if you want the shop to tighten them by hand. Otherwise they use pneumatic. Now I have time to the body shop but now I have to find a good painter x) "That car is so freaking expensive that I don´t want to touch the paint. I can take the rust off and prime it but let a real professional paint it for your sake!" :´D Its funny that I live in a village with under 2000 residents and we have 3 car repair shops  here xD

LahiruJ In reply to NESkimo88 [2019-06-13 14:14:45 +0000 UTC]

Dayum that's the first time I've heard that you have to pay extra to tighten them by hand. As long as the paint booth is properly enclosed and that the painter is skilled, you won't have anything much to worry about. The paint work on a car needs to be done right or else all your friends would gladly pinpoint any minor flaws, I know since my friends like to do that on my cars as well. Finding a good painter would definitely be the hard part, btw are you going with the original paint code or are you gonna completely go for a new colour? How about the interior, I noticed some gauges and wires hanging around from the photo you had uploaded. Still saying you should upload some photos over here, just got only one photo to get a glimpse. Some shots of the interior and engine bay would be cool.

NESkimo88 In reply to LahiruJ [2019-06-13 22:30:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the hand tightening is some sort off "special job" On the wheel shops they too it with a torque wrench for extra money. Otherwise they hammer it with pneumatic. The problem with these back town auto shops is that they don´t have the proper space for doing that. The guy I asked paints the cars in the same space he does repair work so its not clean. And as he said himself if it was just a beater car he would gladly do it but because its rare he would rather not to cause it would not be perfect. I can still back off or let him too the base job and paint it later. I´m going with the original color, it doesn´t look that bad but after proper wash and its not the same old "Subaru blue" I like that color but I rather have something different. The interior needs some cleaning, I start by vacuuming but I the get seats washed properly. There is some cheap after market boost gauge(digital led hell)already have a replacement one and fuel mixture gauge that has jammed to 14,8. I upload more pics at weekend. Now is only waiting for the brake lines and discs to arrive. There is not much I can do before that. Put the new shiny wheel bolts on maybe xD

That's the issue with painters all over the world, they like to provide excuses up front. It's not that they can't do a good job it's just that they are not organised properly to do a clean proper paint job. It's always good to keep the stock colour because if in case you're selling the car the buyers would use the change of colour as a price drop strategy. Are you going for slotted and cross drilled discs? You can also do some basic upgrades by yourself to the engine such as swapping the radiator with an Aluminum radiator for better cooling, etc. Looking forward towards seeing the photos.

NESkimo88 In reply to LahiruJ [2019-06-14 05:58:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, and what it only need is make a tent or room from plastic or plywood and but fan in for air. The expensive ones has those paint ovens etc. My Celica also has some starting rust but because its a beater car I was thinking trying my hand on that. The Subaru I only let pros touch the paint. Other things I can pretty much do myself. Yep semi-slotted and drilled discs for looks and brake hoses will be steel weave. We have only discussed that if I want to add a splitter to the front I should consider painting the plastic parts black for details, don´t know yet. The plan was to first to the critical parts in this case Full oil service and brakes and get the rust off. The plan is to make its so that I can drive it daily but if I want I could go to track if I want to really test it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LahiruJ In reply to NESkimo88 [2019-06-14 13:05:44 +0000 UTC]

Rust seems to be a common issue in Finland, love the idea of a front mounted splitter. Don't turn it into a track car then it won't be reliable and you would hate trying to use it on a regular basis. Keep the mods simple and try to keep as much stock and clean as possible. Some people go over the top such as changing the pistons, increasing the bore size, changing the turbo, etc.

NESkimo88 In reply to LahiruJ [2019-06-14 22:48:34 +0000 UTC]

The Climate here don´t help. Hot and cold+they over do the salt in winter. Thats why many people buy these kind of cars from the north more snow and ice ---> less road salt. In the south they pretty much keep the roads open with salt. I live in the middle parts of the country where they only use salt on the biggest roads and they stop using it after the air gets like -4 celsius cause it doesn´t help after that. But yeah Finland is a shitty place to own a car If you really want to keep it in shape you should only drive it during summer and keep it in warm garage during winter. I´m not into track racing that I would ruin it But my friend said if you have any interest even if we keep it in daily driving contention I should give it a try during track days. Oh I forgot to mention that there is one mod someone has done don´t know how but the turbo "overflow" line has been plugged so it makes that ni ni ni ni ni ni sound on high revs when the turbo starts to spin backwards. Luckily there is adjustable valve so you can open that so you won´t ruin the turbo.

LahiruJ In reply to NESkimo88 [2019-06-16 01:44:10 +0000 UTC]

Lol. The road salt is what kills a car. That's an awkward mod to do, seems like one of the previous owners have played around with the engine a little bit.

NESkimo88 In reply to LahiruJ [2019-06-16 08:27:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, its on the soft side now so it isn´t that bad. Don´t know how hard is to undo it. My Friend has a Turbo Legacy his "Holy Grail" as he says. It´s only a half a car now cause the body begins to fall apart and you can´t find parts for it easily. Body parts at least. But he is planning to plug the turbo just for the sound. And I think he ruins the turbo at same time :´D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LahiruJ In reply to NESkimo88 [2019-06-16 10:07:41 +0000 UTC]

Yup most people love to plug and play around with the turbo and until it gets ruined and you have to source a new turbo replacement which is expensive. I remember one of my friends who decided to remap his ECU and ended up killing his car and having to get a new ECU with a complete wiring harness from a professional tuning shop for a very expensive bill.
