"The Sky is Crying"

The night was cold and lonely,
As I sat and watched the waves;
And as a sudden chill swept through me,
I thought of the last few days.

It seemed like such a dream come true,
To live here, with surf and sand;
All beautiful women and palm trees,
Me, a boy, thinking I was a man.

Where did it start to go wrong,
This dreamy Eden of mine?
Was it when we spent money so freely,
On whatever got us high?

Hotels, drugs, and alcohol;
Stylish clothes and pretty girls;
All our sins which sucked us dry,
Left us deathly pale as pearls.

Like three young princes in paradise,
We rose with the setting sun;
Even when the cash was a memory,
We still found ways to have fun.

Then suddenly, I tired of the game;
I had nothing more to say;
I stayed on the beach one night
As they went on their way.

They weren't supposed to be gone for long,
But as time kept going by,
I realized that they'd forgotten me,
Their promise to return, a lie....

So I struck up a conversation,
With some people in the park;
They shared with me some cigarettes,
But left soon after dark.

So I walked across the pier
To a closed sidewalk cafe;
With chairs in which to rest
As the rain ends the day.

And here I sit, alone,
Wearing my jacket like second skin;
Just wondering what happened
To the perfect world I had been in.

But the howling wind mocks me
Like righteous laughter in my ears;
And the sky, like me, is crying,
A stream of constant tears.

So muttering prayers and curses,
I drift into darkness deep;
Lost in my own helplessness,
'Til the morning breaks my sleep...
