My mermaid chick finally has a name and a formal reference, yeah!! (You... never see most of these characters in their Demi form anyway, s-so... : D;; )
Anyway, here she is! A half-blood mermaid Seth meets early on in Iris under rather disagreeable circumstances, though her kind of cold/sarcastic attitude toward Seth might just be attributed to her personality regardless of what kind of impression Seth could've made. She's unimpressed by just about everything and rather pessimistic about her situation, though she's still trying to follow a dream. She wears her seal on her wrist despite the fact that she almost never has the opportunity to assume her Demi form.
This picture is also an interesting mix--I did copics on the right and then watercolors on the left, and I... definitely prefer my watercolors, hahahah. So don't take the copic colors too seriously. I do prefer the outfit on the right, though... (mainly the boots)

I-I-I've had a lot of female characters, honest!! I just never spent much time developing or drawing them... but I'm working on that now! They've been there all along, honest!

I absolutely adore the coat on the left! But you are right, I'm in love with the boots on the right though.
And you did well with showing her pessimistic ways, she looks rather gloomy with both the greyish, muted colours and the "closed up" poses - just..guarded altogether.

Are they really that unconventional...? I don't know, Iris is such a funny story since it's all about all these mythological creatures but they're in such an urban setting so half the time they just appear human... it's a confusing tale, hahahah;;

in urban fantasy, i've only seen vampires and werewolves; urban fantasy mermaids and centaurs - less so and it's really neat!

Hahahahah, I was actually just gonna say... SAGA's awesome, eh? xD To be honest anything by BKV is solid gold, he's hands-down my favorite author in the american comics industry. I actually don't follow many other big-name comics?? But a lot of what Image comics publishes is always some really good stuff, so look around? I've also read a crapton of smaller independent comics but can't think of many that really amazed me off the top of my head.
Some people really like the work of Craig Thompson; maybe he's worth a look? Most of the other artists whose works I've really liked are Japenese, so that's a separate subject... xD
Personally I really love the work of an Italian comic artist, Gipi. Their watercolors are just exquisite, ahhh. <3

Y'know, I had to do a double-take to realize the right was copics. I think you're handling them really nicely. And similarly enough despite yourself~ Your watercolours have more dimension and a better palette, but you've really hit a nice spot with copics too. The solid of her pants is really clean and I like the blend on her boots.
I.. I actually like the tan colour scheme a lot <3 If they had the boots it'd be best of both worlds~
