Everyone, I'm... going with you...(I'm messing up my quotes but shush okay)
My birthday gift for ~dictatorofrandomosia , though I feel like it's hardly a birthday gift since I got to draw Luke--man, I sure missed drawing this idiot! I think he missed me too, haha~ ♥
This game still gets me emotional like nothing else, and ohmygod just listening to the soundtrack while working on this made me feel so friggin' nostalgic, guuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh ;v;
Anyway,

I feel like I'm always drawing Tales of the Abyss fanart for you, which isn't ever a bad thing, but goshdarnit someday girl I'm gonna wring your OCs out of youuuuuuuuuu~ >:u Still, have a GREAT DAY, DEAR!!! Ahhh, thank you! The pixelness is a side effect of my using the "pencil" tool in shipainter oekaki, but it's just the most comfortable tool for me, so I've really just gotten used to using it~

I guess it's cause some areas are smoother and some are suddenly pixely in it? It makes an odd contrast I'm not used to seeing oO;

Ahh, sorry about that, I don't really like the cropping either, but I drew the image in oekaki, which is a limited browser-based drawing application, so it's actually rather difficult to change canvas sizes once you start drawing. So it's a rather awkward cut, hahah, sorry!

That work you've done with the glow and lights is amazing. AMAZING! The way his skin has shape and shadow, but also has the glow of lights. Wow. It's been fascinating to see the courses you've done start to influence your work.

I've been thinking about doing that. Skipping lineart and just painting something. But I don't know how to paint.

I think the biggest roadblock to me when painting was always trying to make a decent sketch first, then painting over it and then somehow trying to match the sketch as I went! I think what really loosened me up was learning that there should be no sketch: nothing more than general contours of the figure, at most, and guidelines for the face--then it's just about laying down the colors and then carving/shaping the details out of that! It's a reverse kind of process in a way so it can take a while to get used to it, but once you get into it it's really fun! o:
Just remember to use a big, wide brush, and better yet, try to do it all on one layer. I find that having to flip between layers just pisses me off; usually I'll do an initial (thick-lined) sketch, block in colors and rough shading on the layer underneath that, then just merge the layers and get to work detailing!

Yeah skipping between layers gets to be annoying for me too. A lot of the time I forget what layer I'm on and end up messing everything up. It'd be nice to just do something all on the one layer. Or maybe just use two. Have a rough layer and do everything on top of that.
A tutorial would be pretty helpful for us newbies.

Nice work. Luke's one of my favorite Tales characters. Glad that they made a handheld remake of Tales of the Abyss.

And yeah, I'm really glad that they're bringing another version of it over, particularly since sales for the PS2 version weren't so hot and it got discontinued not long after its release. That just makes it such a friggin' hard game to find... But it's by far got the best story and characterization I've ever played in a game, I just get so friggin' emotional every time I see stuff related to it, hahah!

I think part of the reason why the sales of the original verison of Abyss didn't do too well had something to do with the sales of Legendia, which was released around the same time as Abyss. I agree with about the story and characterization of Abyss. That's the main reason why it's one of my top favorite games.

Yeah, but also the release of TotA was roughly around the time of the release of Final Fantasy XII (or whatever number they're up to, lol) and... well, we all know the Tales series are super underdogs compared to a name like Final Fantasy outside of Japan, soooo..... 9__9;; Not the best marketing techniques, Namco US...
Still, they're making some pretty big pushes with Tales of Graces F and the handheld releases--REALLY hope to see more Tales games brought about soon!! (Personally I REALLY want to see Xillia, hah!)
