I sort of grasped that (sort of, having seen very little in the way of angels), but I meant, what do they do? Are they guardians or commanders or an amalgamation beyond human words?

Hmm, what are angels you ask . . .

Aliens, agents of God, the gods themselves . . . whatever angels truly are is quite a debate for many points of view

But one thing I can say for certain is that they are spiritual beings that help us in our lives, and they don't look like humans with wings

Don't be surprised a good chunk of the angels have a strange alien appearance save for the archangels.
