Description

The Toyota Supra needs no introduction. It is one of the most famous and sought after Japanese sports cars, made famous by movies like The Fast And The Furious and video games such as Gran Turismo and Need for Speed.

The first generation of the Supra (A40/A50) debuted in 1978. It was called Toyota Celica Supra (Celica XX in Japan) and it was a sportier and more luxurious vewrsion of the standard Celica. The most powerful version was fitted with the 5M 2.8-litre inline-6 engine, which made about 117 hp, coupled to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.

The 2nd gen Celica Supra/XX (A60) was launched in 1982. Compared to the standard Celica, the A60 Supra had a completely redesigned front end, featuring pop-up headlights. Once again, the most powerful engine option was the 5M inline-6, this time making up to 178 hp.

In 1986 the Supra became a separate model. The new A70 Supra was not anymore based on the Celica. It was originally fitted with a 7M 3.0-litre inline-6, both in N/A and turbocharged form, but in 1990 the new 1JZ 2.5-litre inline-6 engine became available, making up to 276 hp (claimed).

Finally, in 1993, Toyota presented the new A80 Supra, destined to become a legend.

The only engine available on the A80 was the legendary 2JZ 3.0-litre inline-6, known for being easy to tune. It was available both in N/A and turbocharged form, with the latter featuring a complex sequential twin-turbo system. The Supra Turbo's power output was an impressive 326 hp, and the performace figures were equally impressive: 0-100 km/h took 6.4 s, and the top speed was 250 km/h.

Starting from 1999, the A80 was only sold in Japan. In 2002, production of the Supra ended altogether.

But in 2019 Toyota launched the new GR Supra, developed in collaboration with BMW. The enthusiasts' reaction to the 'A90' Supra was mixed, due to it being based on the J29 Z4, but it remains a competent sports car and, in my opinion, it is worthy of the Supra name.
