Description A drawing that had been sitting on my computer for months. This is my first successful attempt at cel-shading. I've been working on this style for awhile but always end up relying on the blur tool to smooth things out when it doesn't look right.

How does the shading look? Does it actually look shaded or like I just dumped a bunch of color splotches on top of each other?

i know what you mean about relying on the blur tool, it took me ages to start cell shading instead
i think you did a really good job with the colouring and it doesn't at all look like a bunch of splotches
you got the pose and figure just right, great work! ^_^

I love the blotches of color, I'd be very happy to tell you to keep them but I have colored things that way in ms paint (which to all who have known it, sux) and it is very, very time consuming.
I really like the look though, It's so smooth

Well, I think the shading is quite fine! It looks much more better than your last works.
I really like her pose and her looking.
Great picture!

Yeah? That's really encouraging to hear. I working hard on the coloring and shading aspect because I feel like that's what's really keeping my art from standing out right now. It's good to know that some progress is being made.

The shading is quite cool. It's unique. It works better on her face/hair and on her arms and clothing though. I think it's just a bit too stripy on her legs but no doubt you disagree

I also think her weight is a bit too far back. You've got the pose almost right, but she looks like she's going to tip over backwards. I think to remedy this her weight needs to be higher and further forwards, i.e. her legs less bent.

Hair and shoes are great! Nice idea overall too

No, I definitely appreciate comments that will help me improve my art. I'm trying to get the hang of cel-shading because it's a style I really like and I think it fits my lineart better than what I was doing before. I'll definitely keep your tips in mind.

Good job on thing I would recomend is to use colours that are slightly closer to eachother on her outer leg. the lightest brown is a little too light in my oppinion, it makes the and lightest brown appear a little harsh. A little more shading on the hands and face couldent hurt eather.

Though you did a WONDERFUL job on the pose.

I like this it's nice. The dress is the best part I think.

I think her thigh could use a little work though. Maybe get rid of the light one on the bottom and just use the darkest shade on the bottom of her thigh. I think it would look better that way.

Again great job I like the gun and the hair also.

Hope this helps

i like this very much and also your style is very nice.
it seem shaded to me, only i prefer the shadows of the face and hands more than the legs ones. probably is the highlights that make 'em seem made of plastic, you could try to reduce them or take them away and see if you get a better look (^__^)

bye

Cool picture( especially the pose). Cell shading can be a bit tricky; a transitional color between the light/shadow will soften things up. The sheen/highlight on the legs could benefit from this. Lightening the opacity
could help too. I used a cellshading color style myself for a while and have examples in my gallery that might help [link] .

I like it. I'm also of the opinion that there's too much shine on the legs. Maybe something simpler like what you did for her hand. Maybe you could remove the brightest tone from the leg closer to us and move the shape upwards. Also the other leg could work without that bright spot, it's all in the shade, after all. The line already gives the muscle its definition.

I hope you find these suggestions useful (it looks nice as is).

My advise would be to ease out on the highlight layer on the leg. It's important to think about reflection and light absorbation, and skin tends to be less glossy if not sweaty or generally wet with some other liquid.
My point is that it looks good, but the highlight on the leg stood out a bit in my eyes.

It looks awesome! But I wouldn't be able to tell since I can't shade. But I do have an artist's eye, so I guess my say counts (^^) The anatomy is really good too. Could you do a tutorial on that plz? Thanks.

I'm really glad you like it. A tutorial? I could try to put one together, but be warned. I'm self taught and don't use any of the popular programs (which is probably half of my problem). I'll see what I can do though.

The colouring style works fantastically on the upper half of the female's body. The sleeves and the hands look great but the lower half of her jumper and her leg especially don't look quite right here. Possibly a few more layers of shading rather than the three you've used here would be more effective? Other than that the pose is great and her hair is very well done.

This is a pretty unique and refreshing style! Even though you use solid blotches of color to shade, it turned out incredible. The only issue is that you have the shading a bit nonexistant in some places.

The face could use some shading, along with a tiny bit more for the hands and feet. Thing is, though, with this style, it'd be a bit hard to pull it off. And, of course, these might be stylistic choices, to keep the shading bare in those areas. If that's the case, just read my first paragraph up until 'incredible'

No, I definitely appreciate the feedback. I do want to use more detailed shading in the future, but right now I'm still struggling a little with the technique, simple as it seems.

Dizqard In reply to lamontrobinsonart [2009-10-30 10:31:28 +0000 UTC]

Doesn't seem simple at all I have a hard time using just broad streaks, so I couldn't imagine having to use actual shapes.

Yeah dude, this is cool. I really like your coloring/shading. It's along the lines of my style, or at least what I'm trying to develop as my style. I think her jacket looks really good. I'd actually like to see a little more detail (color-wise) in her hands and feet though. Her left hand and her ankles look a little bare. The way you shaded the gun also throws me off a bit since you used gradients instead of hard lines like the rest of the piece. And, to directly address the "color splotches" question, I think it looks great overall. It looks a little thrown together in her shows but that's about it. Overall I think you did a fantastic job. This definitely pops, which is good.
