Woah, one week without internet and I come back to one of those deviation floods in my box. XD you people sure are active.Anyway, Lan is proud to present you Dood's main companion and fellow (accidentally as well) chosen one, Marvin O. Hasentanz. With him is the incredibly wise Arch-Mage Frederick Von Cheezburg which is, oddly enough, a fuzzy spider (thanks to Marvin's incompetence).
Marv's design is probably the one most drastically remodeled since he was originally conceived as a slim character (he was in fact skinnier than Dood). The reason behind his weight increase was mainly my constant effort to make these protagonists the antithesis of what you'd consider a "chosen one" archetype. In fact, fat characters are few and far between in action adventure comic lore, and I for one have never even seen one act as main character. In Irratica though, neither flab nor absolute lack of magic skills are deciding factors in your way to heroic fame, so here we are. All of you wish him good luck.

its interesting because there are so few fat people in adventure stories and if they are fat they lose it through some sort of cliche "to become the hero you must become pure" s***. i see so many thin heroes im sick of it, i want to see a hero that looks different a hero that's not perfect but doesn't have to be. a hero like a real person.

I really dig the way you think with this character's look, it makes it much funner, but I also like how it doesn't seem to be what the character is completely built around like I feel is the case with certain other characters doing something similar.

I absolutely agree with your decision. I'm doing concepts for a comic which features an overweight protagonist as well, and my decision to do this was just like yours: too few comics these days seriously place overweight characters in their storylines. The only significant overweight/obese characters in comics that I can recall are Gert from Runaways (who wasn't so much fat as she was short), and Big Burtha from Great Lakes Avengers. The fact is, a lot of the people we associate with "heroes" aren't perfectly sculpted Adonises either, and a lot of them are indeed overweight. It's good to see someone else using this idea to have the heroic position fall into the lap of someone who isn't of a body type that someone would immediately think of as heroic. The world's not made up of Supermen and Wonder-Women.

He still has those, they're hidden under the hat. He'll actually show his ears more often now since he can just throw the hat back like a hoodie.

It's true, in any other story I'd take him to be the sidekick/whipping boy of the chosen one. I'm impatient to see how he surprises us all.

Why do I get the feeling we are witnessing the key strategy of our heroes?
I rather liked Marvin's old design, partly because he looked like some sort of mad rabbit creature, but the new design is pretty nice too. I do worry a bit that some people who haven't been able to see the development process may judge him to be the token 'fat kid' though.

He still has the bunny ears, he just hides em under his hat. Actually tho, the redesign will allow him to show his ears around more liberally, since the hat can now be slid back like a hoodie
And yes XD, if this was a videogame RPG, the run option would be above the action one in bold red letters XD

The fact that all but his face is green is a bit awkward, as far as design goes. But part of me thinks that's what you were going for.

I had to simplify him ;( He was one of the busier designs, to the point of excessive detail DX. Still, killing detail is probably the toughest part of redesign for me XD
