Personality: Cadence is enthusiastic and eager to learn, though he has trouble accepting criticism when he makes a mistake. He has a passion for music and enjoys dancing most of all. Because of a previous accident that damaged his voice, Cadence is mute; despite this, he has learned to communicate effectively through gestures and his own style of dance, with the telepathic Meri at his side to help fill in some of the finer details when necessary.

Your footsteps echoed down the hallways, long and empty, faint sounds barely audible coming from the tiny flaws in the soundproof doors and walls of the studio. One door, at the very end, had no sound coming through it, whatsoever. Upon opening, it was a recording room, but it was heartlessly bare, save for a couple of chairs, one, closed window that let in light, a notepad and a pencil on a desk, a recording mike, and a small Bayhound. The Bayhound crooned softly, its voice broken and harsh unlike a normal Bayhound's melodious chirping. It looked around at you, hearing the door open, immediately shutting up, before looking sad. He seemed unable to talk.

"Can you speak?" I ask, trying to talk with the Bayhound.

The Bayhound hesitated, before shaking his head no, not wanting to even try.

I gaze at it, "but I heard you singing. You may not sing in the same way that other Bayhounds like you do, but you still sing beautifully" I say, trying to cheer the poor thing up.

I sit next to the bayhound and wrap my arm around it,wiping the tears from it eyes.

The Bayhound looked surprised at the sudden hug, but didn't try to fight against you. Instead, he just remained silent, sitting quietly in your embrace.

"Are you alright, little one?" I ask anxiously, kneeling down next to the Bayhound. "How come you stopped singing?"

The Bayhound just looked at you sadly, mouth kept shut and silent.

"Can't you talk?" I reach out and pet the Bayhound, trying to comfort it.

The Bayhound shook his head no, hurriedly wiping away his tears.

"How come? Did something happen?"

The Bayhound still did not reply, looking down. He did not seem to want to use his voice.

"How did you lose your voice?" I press him. "Can you talk at all?"

The Bayhound tried to speak, but only a monstrous croaking sound came out, causing the Bayhound to flinch and shrink back in shame.

"Oh, no," I say sadly, reaching out to pet it again. "I didn't mean to upset you. I don't mind how your voice sounds."

The Bayhound shook his head, looking down with visible sadness in his eyes. Then he suddenly looked up and pointed to the notepad and pencil on the desk, looking at you urgently.

I glanced over at the notepad and pencil, then to the Bayhound's frantic gestures, and put the pieces together. I walked to the desk and picked them up. "Here," I said, bringing them back to the Bayhound and placing them on the ground. "Is this what you wanted?"

The Bayhound immediately curled its hand/thing around the pencil and began writing sloppily on the first page, seeming to have trouble holding the pencil, with obvious reasons.
Hello, the Bayhound wrote.

"Hello," I answer. "Can you tell me what happened?"

Accident, the Bayhound replied back, the small, near illegible word on paper seeming to contain a million words.

Travelling with family... crashed, the Bayhound replied, not looking at you afterwards.

"Oh, I'm so sorry," I murmur softly. "That must be horrible for you, especially as a Bayhound. Is there anything I can do to help?"

Hurt throat... Can't sing anymore, replied the Bayhound sadly. Doctor says won't heal.

"Well...what can you do instead?"

I don't know. All my life I've trained to sing to follow my family.... Now I can't.

I nod in understanding. "That must be hard for you...can't your family give you another job? Something else to do that's important?"

Not sure. Family has been travelling singers for long time, replied the Bayhound, faltering a little bit. Don't know what to do. Help me? Find something I can do?

"...What if you found someone else to be with?" I ask tentatively. "If you truly can't go with your family anymore...you at least shouldn't be all alone. You can find other things to do if you live with somebody who appreciates you for all your skills, not just singing."

That's the thing... What other skills do I have? The Bayhound looked up at you, a deep frown and true sadness showing in its blue face.

"You may not feel like you have any other talents at the moment," I tell him. "You've just lost the only skill you've been working on your whole life. But I promise you, there are other things you can learn. If you truly want to, and you work at it, there's no reason you can't become just as talented at anything you set your mind to. And until then, you can be useful in other ways," I assure him, running my hand down the small Bayhound's back.

The Bayhound quietly purred, liking the petting. Will you... teach me another way? To be useful? he wrote, looking up at you hopefully.

"I'll teach you anything you like," I promise, smiling at the sound of his purr and continuing to pet him. "We'll try many different things, and see which ones you like the best."

The Bayhound wiggled. Being pet felt pretty good. In a family of Bayhounds, they didn't usually just go around petting each other. Well, I can still move. I just can't talk well anymore.

"Well, you could try dancing," I suggest, continuing the petting. "Bayhounds can dance, right? Even your lack of a voice can't stop you from doing something like that."

The Bayhound cocked his head at you. Dancing?

"Sure! You could listen to music and dance to it, rather than singing. I think you'd be great at that! Plus," I add, "it's used as a sort of nonverbal communication among humans and other animals. Dance can express emotions, share ideas, tell stories...You might find it better than writing on your notepad all the time."

The Bayhound sat up for a while, thinking. Can you teach me? Dancing?

I laugh. "I can try, though I'm not very good at it myself. Some of my other friends might have to help out."

"I'll help you too, don't worry," I assure him. "You'll learn in no time!"

The Bayhound wobbled up on its little hind legs, looking determined, the phrase, "I'm ready!" practically blazing in its eyes.

"Silly, I didn't think you meant right this minute," I tell him, laughing at the little Bayhound's earnestness. "There's no music in this room. I can't teach you to dance without music. But if...if you came home with me, I could teach you to dance there. You'd be the best dancer in the whole house, and you could perform for the others that live with me, if you like. You could join our family."

The Bayhound made a ":C" face. I want to learn right away!, he scribbled, practically throwing the notepad at you after scribbling it. Then he rushed to get it back after he heard the rest of your sentence, adding onto his scribble. Really? What's your family like? he asked.

"My family is made up of many different creatures," I tell him. "Some of them are Aislings, like you. They're all so different...I don't know how to begin describing them all. I don't live with any other humans; personally, I prefer my family's company to that of my own kind. But they can all understand human speech, and most of them can talk back, so we have no trouble communicating." I pause, looking at him. "They'd welcome you, I'm sure of it. Especially Karina. She's the newest to come live with us...she'd like to have another Bayhound in the family. And we could teach you to dance at home--you're enthusiastic, eager to learn; you'd pick it up quickly, and you'd be among those who can appreciate you for who you are, and all your talents."

The Bayhound tilted his head, looking interested, before frowning. But I can't talk, the Bayhound wrote. I won't always have a notepad with me.

"That's alright! That's part of why you'll be learning to dance, after all. And anyway, one of my family members is telepathic and relays information through touch. She could be a translator for you when you need her, until you learn how to communicate effectively on your own, even without a voice."

The Bayhound's eyes were wide. "Okay," the Bayhound croaked, its voice still horribly mangled but at least he could form words in emergency situations. I'll find my purpose with you.
