Description
I kept drawing while I was in Norway, or perhaps I should say that I started anew. I can't even remember the last time I made so many new artworks in such short time, not to mention the majority were actually landscape paintings - and landscapes (and painting) have been my bane since ever. But perhaps I am starting to learn!
There were a few days during my vacation Jayme and I stayed at home listening to music of meaning for a couple of hours, painting.... and somehow I managed to compose a landscape-looking speedpaint within something like half an hour. Very sketchy of course, but having the gist of the place. I used photos I had taken during our hikes. Of course, I couldn't reconcile to the really sketchy initial versions and I went over each of them at least a bit to refine.... this one received the most attention because I was learning to draw rocks and ground vegetation. And later well.... something else appeared.... or more like, somebody.
So.... this is Kattfjorddalen as seen from Tverrfjellet, which we had climbed 3 days earlier. I had lots of photos and while in a painting mood decided, why not try to paint a sketch of it. Ever since then landscape photo taking was not only about the photo anymore.... it was about the reference. Because as much as I love photography, my camera alone cannot remove what does not belong........................... so this is Kattfjorddalen as it should be.
Torstein is just chilling there. Had that idea glimpse randomly a while ago, but just today it somehow clicked and I painted him quickly. I think he's rather young here, which I didn't even plan on, but it worked out. He's having a chill day, observing the valley and the many wandering dots down by the lake the color of biege, light and dark brown.... if you know what I mean. Technically it's quite a broad daylight for a crepuscular siderian to be out here, but it's also the Midnight Sun so it stays daylight-y deep into the evening and since obscenely early in the morning. Truth be told, the photo I used as reference was taken around 8 pm. Yeah, we were hiking until 10 or something because it was after work in the day. Well worth it though, hopefully I will paint some more of those photos and showcase some more of the reason why.
So yeah, despite the revisiting and refinement, I still kept it sketchy because it would have taken forever otherwise anyway. Perhaps better I paint more landscapes and practice than refine each one into insanity and manage only few. I still like it and I like that it became a snapshot of normal siderian life. I'm learning from the best. Speaking of which, I've come to associate this valley with Yava and Falkner's family because of this beautiful painting: Family trip - the mountain you see in the distance to the right is Tverrfjellet. So this is the same valley (and lake), but seem from another angle, from Tverrfjellet's vantage point.
