This is a beauty, Kat. The muted colours are just gorgeous and the smooth pearly effect in the spiral centres add such nice highlights and points of interest. I'm gonna have to fave it as an example not only of great work but also a classic example of the inherent beauty of a fractal midget.

Midgets can be very beautiful in structure, can't they? It's too bad that when one zooms in this far (and much, much farther), there are very few coloring formulas which do anything at all and after a while, most midgets start to look quite similar. Color and masking are some of the only ways to change the look. Thank goodness for the fabulous gradient editor!

Yes, I know how tricky they can be... which precisely why I appreciate a nice one when I see it!

I did try some deep zooming some time back but the results were not astounding, for the colouring reasons you stated. One or two were very pretty, structurally, but took many hours to render ~ I'm pretty patient but I do find that off-putting, especially when the first render is generally just to have a "quick peek" to see if something is worth pursuing.

Ack! I didn't realise you had been suffering for weeks with the shoulder - I'm not surprised you're fed up if you're used to keeping busy. Still, it's an ill wind and all that... at least we're being treated to more images than usual from you, I always enjoy seeing what you've been getting up to.
