Description Exclusive Sneak Peek !

This is my page for a Belgian artbook-project called "HOW TO SAVE THE WORLD - SCRAPBOOK"

They asked 44 artists to create a page for this book. Each page has a different title and subject and it's about making the world a better place, revolutionary ideas, etc.

My page was about how technology can make the world a better place.

I'll explain the idea behind the drawing a little bit in detail:

You can see a large machine/collection of machines that work in a Rube Goldberg-kind of way. This is a metaphor for how people always tend to take the difficult way or make things needlessly complicated.
The machine starts from above, like a "deus ex machina", a god helping us. Solar energy provides the power for the machine, environmentally positive .

The best way to create the ultimate technology is by eliminating the time we waste on basic needs. I added a little nod to our bad food habits (popcorn), there's toast too and the bowling balls eventually end up mashing potatos. There's juice and coffee too.
There's also music and film, because that provides relaxation/ideas and just makes life so much greater.

On the right is also a robot, programmed to kill annoying cellphone ringtones with a ringtone killer spray ( an ode to the hilarious "shark spray" in the first Batman film -1966- ), just to make life easier.

In the middle we see a machine that takes care of our laundry, another problem we don't have to think of and finally the ultimate solution to a lot of our problems ( and perhaps all ) might be a supercomputer that is so smart that it can solve all our problems. He will even leave room for human ideas so we don't become stupid. It's an absurd over the top idea, of course, but I think it's some food for thought. And it was fun to do ^_^. There was so much more I would wanted to put in there, but yeah, the paper was not big enough. Perhaps the supercomputer knows what I should do .

the DD was cool, it was actually Luke Pearson who told me I got a DD when I met him in London in 2009.

You deserve those words. You got a very original style.
And this, for me, it's better than do the common fantasy illustration (well done, ok) of the same common subjects.
Originality never goes out of fashion buddy.

thanks a lot, man. In the past I was always thinking: now how do I get my own style ? In the end I gave up thinking about that, I just kept doing and making things I like. being influenced by everything you can imagine. movies, music, books, other artists, experiences in life.. If you keep doing and making what you like, that becomes a blueprint of what you are and somehow keeps a certain authenticity. I'd love to say that to everyone who keeps making disney or manga fan art, yuck !

Love the artwork, I mean I really love the artwork, but it feels like you've been a bit of a sucker for greenie propoganda.

laresistance In reply to RichardNobody [2009-07-16 23:29:07 +0000 UTC]

thanks so much for the kind words and useful comment. I know what you mean, but it's no greenie propaganda, don't worry. it's a big art project and it was more loose and creative. the political or environmental message wasn't very important. I guess they used that to get some credibility. but it was all basically just a lot of fun. and I think it shows this piece is not too moralistic.

Style. It's simplistic, cartoonish---yet it's detailed

so this is a win-win situation! Great job and good job

I had to look up superjail, but, wow it's fantastic ! so hilariously cruel and fun !!

details are one of my trademarks. I love it when you can discover a lot of stuff in one drawing. thank you so much for the great comment ! a ship full of cookies to you

Cadillac-Blood In reply to laresistance [2009-07-16 23:26:18 +0000 UTC]

YAAAAAY! Cookies! But ya, you're art---I even showed it
to my buddies and asked them what it reminded them of,
and they said on the spot, "The Superjail! structures!"
And I was like, "Yeah, me too! XD"

But yeah, Superjail!'s a gory, goofy cartoon show on
[adult swim] on Cartoon Network. Christy Karacas and Ste-
ven Warbrick created it, and it's become my favorite show
ever since. X3

You don't have a bare idea of how many boxes of anti ringtone spray I'd buy... I swear.

Very nice piece. I'd say it's only 50% of the thing... even if that solves our problems we'd still need to help the earth, unpolluting it and undoing all the harm we've done to it.

Enough said.
Great job!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

laresistance In reply to SpiralPegasus [2009-07-16 23:15:32 +0000 UTC]

hee hee, I know ! the anti ringtone spray is very popular, perhaps I should work it out and sell it. could make me a millionaire..
annoying is perhaps not the right word to describe how annoying ringtones can be in this world.

the piece is absolutely not a 100% world saviour idea. the subject was given to me: "save the world by means of technology". it was limited. and the space was limited as well. only one sheet of paper. it was more of a creative and artistic challenge to come up with a visualisation of the idea.

either way, thanks so much !

This is one of the most impressive artworks I've ever seen.

I'm really lost in it, great great great!
Is there any chance to buy the book anywhere?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

laresistance In reply to entengruetze [2009-07-16 23:10:00 +0000 UTC]

wow, that means a lot to me. It's certainly not the best I can, because I had to draw this fast, in the morning, without having slept. but sometimes the best stuff emerges in situations of stress, when the deadline is coming dangerously near.

I really like it when you said "I'm really lost in it". That's exactly what I want. I love drawings that challenge the viewer. Something you can keep looking at, like a "where's waldo"-drawing.

unfortunately, the book wasn't published, but was only to be seen in a very large version, as an art project, in Ghent, Belgium. The pages were poster sized.

but if you watch me, I'll post more information about my future projects and booklets that are coming up.

danke schΓΆn !
