Description Yes yes we all know that Goa'uld ground forces is a fucking meme of its own due to how hilariously bad it is at ground combat. Meanwhile every single faction in Space Battleship Yamato had decent ground forces to defend their planets or launching planetary invasions, ranging from wheeled APCs to heavy main battle tanks to powered mech suits, robotic soldiers and automated combat drones.

I still like both franchises however

Yeah, that tends to happen when peasants populate most of the planets in your empire and you pretty much have all the big guns.Β

Battletech -for all its 'battlemechs are king' shenanigans- is one of the few that actually goes into what is needed to take planets, even despiteΒ having it's back broken. For example, before the first two succession wars almost nuked humanity to the stone age on an interstellar scale, it regularly took divisionsΒ (with tanks, 'mechs, artillery, infantry, VTOLs, aircraft, and on occasion riverines) to take and hold a handful of planets with orbital support. Even afterΒ the first two succession wars, it required at least a company with dropship support for a planet with what is considered 'below-average' importance to be taken.

Star Trek is still a sucker at ground combat too iirc.

The thing about military forces composition and quality is that they are often reflection of the battlefield necessities and demands. The Goa'uld System Lords were the predominant power of the galaxy prior to their downfall, and most of their enemies, if not the VAST majority of their enemies are backward natives or displaced human cultures who didn't even know how to make bronze, let alone starships and energy-weapons. In this situation, it isn't necessary, and perhaps even cheaper, to rely on masses of infantry with scary-looking if impractical armour and weapons, since they are not expecting opponents who knows how or has the means to fight - just ignorant, terrified foreign or rebellious populations which they only had to cow into submission. And with the power of their advanced weapons, those guys are more likely to think they're facing emissaries of angry gods rather than invaders (a notion that the Systems Lords did not desist if it ensures obediance). Anything more than that? Well, it's still nothing the liberal application of orbital bombardment cannot handle.Β

All this actually worked very well for thousands of years, so there's no impetus to change. They are so secured in their power, in fact, that for much of their history they only had to deal with rival System Lords. That's why when they faced Earth Humans who actually knows what they are doing, knows how to reverse-engineer their tech and knows how to fight, they performed so badly.

By contrast, the Gamilas Empire from Space Battleship Yamato 2199 often has to face advanced planetary and interstellar powers during their expansion across the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Milky Way Galaxy who are are roughly or could match them technology and military-wise, and in Dessler's obsession to 'bring peace to the galaxy' as he promised his beloved Queen Starsha of Iscandar, there were frequent expansions and massive mobilization of military forces, with the associated constant upgrades to training and technology in order to keep up with the military demands and changing circumstances at many fronts. As those who watched the series are familiar, the Solar System campaign is an indicative of just what sort of level of enemies they often had to deal with when they consider it so unimportant that the delegated the task of conquering/destroying Humanity to second-class alien citizens in their armed forces commanding what by their standards are a token, third-rate force of Gamilon ships and troops. Earth and Humanity at the time were already an interplanetary power that could build fleets, and against such invading forces they still got curbstomped in many battles until they got the Yamato. NOW consider the sort of foes they have their proper, professional forces led by actually competent, battle-hardened and brilliant commanders like Domel to fight, such as the Comet Empire.Β

This is the main reason why Humanity could stomp the System Lords in Stargate but still have our asses handed to us by the Gamilons in Yamato franchise. Different situations required or compelled different necessities, and with it results in different levels of preparations and performance.Β

You should try making a Space Battleship Yamato/Stargate Fanfiction, have you thought about that?
