Actually, with a twist of the hips one can strike a pretty devastating downward blow from that position.

You'll note that in this primer, nearly every starting position is with the stick raised overhead.

Yes, standard is boring but when you're out to sell clothes, the general populace is not likely to be the adventurer at large. One has fun after the boring poses. That's the joy of being a model for a swank haberdashery. Think of it as the paperwrapping on a gift. The imagination can run and play whilst the contents remain unruffled and intact.
