I like the feeling of intimacy here. I am impressed at his conduct: defending his wife from an insulting ex-colleague, but not without taking damage; that really shows his humanity.
She is a very thoughtful wife to tend to his needs. Of course when I remember your 'Victorian strip-tease' illustration: [link] , I have a good idea what will happen when she escorts him to their bedroom...
They really do love each other, that much is obvious. I know she will remind him of just how much he has won in his fight! Beautiful work as always, and a beautiful story to match.

It's from a story I've written this year. It about murder in the victorian era, ghost and opium...
This scene is at the end, Aubrey just fought with an ex-colleague who has treated his wife a harlot. At home he became very sick (especially because of opium) and faint and his wife is taking care of him...
