Thank you very much.  It is one of my own special favourites.  The reference that I used was such a lovely photo of a lovely child.  I have my drawing framed and displayed in my living room and often go over to look at it and wonder how I ever managed to draw it!.

Thank you very much, Luke, and thank you too for adding this to your favourites.

The reference photo that I used was probably taken at the same time as the one that I used for my  'Tam Nhu with a fence' drawing,  in which she was wearing just a pair of shorts.  I have noticed that the links to the reference photos in both these photos no longer worked, so I have remade them just now.  Unfortunately I am no longer a Core member so the thumbnails of other drawings have gone!

No, I get the names of those that I draw from the photographer.  For these Vietnamese photos the photographer is Rehahn, whose link is given in the description above.  He kindly allows me to draw from his photos.

So, may I ask a question? Did you scale first or just free hand drawing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LateStarter63 In reply to mixnmash [2017-11-08 23:14:53 +0000 UTC]

I have not drawn entirely freehand, or at most using a finger on a pencil to judge distances, for some years now since I saw only just in time that I had put an eye in a slightly wrong position (Pencil portrait of Zhang Ziyi as Moon) . After trying several techniques to get an accurately proportioned sketch I now always do my initial sketch using a modification of the 'Slip and Slide' method ( THE SLIP AND SLIDE METHOD with intro to Embossing ) aligning my reference over my drawing paper, hovering my pencil over a key position (corner of eye, mouth etc) before withdrawing the reference and marking that key position on my paper.  I use the marked  key positions as a guide to get an accurate initial sketch.  I also mark lines by rehearing over the reference before withdrawing the reference an marking on the paper.
I feel that I have to resort to some means of ensuring an accurately proportioned sketch as most of the work in a drawing comes with the shading and this will be wasted if the initial sketch is wrong.
Thank you very much for adding this drawing to our favourites.

I see, thank you for replying. I've just heard the slip and slide, but that's really a clever way to sketch the outline
