Actually, yes, or so you can argue. The history of the conflict between Christianity and Islam doesn't start with the sacking of Jerusalem. The Crusades themselves were a long delayed backlash against centuries of Islamic conquests of formerly Christian lands (the brutality of which easily matched that which the crusaders displayed later). Those warriors had essentially the same goals and motives then as jihadists have now. I don't claim to be an expert or anything, but it does concern me.

If I recall, the definition of a 'jihad' is not a holy war, like the Christian crusades, but simply 'struggle in the name of Allah'. Jihads are not supposed to be aggresive, indeed they can only be called if Islam has been assualted and it has many rules regarding it. Therefore if there a jihad on the so-called American West then it is not a proper jihad at all, and the terrorists are not proper Muslims.

Stop labelling all of Islam under the term 'terrorist'.

i agree, any one can be a terrorist, terrorism is just the use of fear and violence to achieve a goal

Very eloquently put my friend Last time I remember anything close to a 'proper' Jihad being called for was almost 40 years ago by one Ayatoullah Quymaini. And even then (though I am a 'follower' of his) I'm sceptical about calling it that. I guess the only one we can really call a Jihad in the former definition would have been the Crusades - because it was defence, not attack.

aribasultan In reply to ??? [2006-11-25 17:57:41 +0000 UTC]

Wrong my friend - Jihad isn't at the centre the way you think it is. What these terrorists are doing doesn't count as Jihad because our religion (Islam) has been broken and torn into factions. Jihad is only a Jihad when the cause is to save a religion - not just ours but any - from anihilation and when EVERY Muslim stands together ready to fight, not just a small fanatic group.

And have you ever read the Qu'Ran of studied the teachings of the Prophet? You'll see he constantly refers to Jesus and the similarities in their ethics are consistent throughout. I hate to break the news to you, but Islam Christianity and Judaism are a lot more alike than people like to admt.

i agree, isnt jihad translated into english struggle, anyway the way i look at it, the is one god and he/she or whatever has three religions that worship the him/her or what, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the younger two are virtually i feel add ons and continuations of the first one, but i guess they are people who have a difference in opinion, i also feel that these fanatical groups arent true followers of Islam since they have strayed from the teachings. have a nice day

And you are a dumbass if you think that the freedom or equality in a society only depends on such single arguments.
In Indonesia fe she was elected because she belonged to the right family (like Benazir Butho in Pakistan).
For Iran, just look how they treat their biggest religious minority the Bahais.
Or how they treat women who dont want to wear a veil.

Or would you say that Russia in the 1800s was a country with gender-equality and freedom because of Katharina the Great.

The reason that women wear so much clothing is because they don't want men to get hot from looking at them like here in the West where females walk around shaking it all over the neighborhood like they have no respect for themselves.

Who are you to judge whether they have culture or lack or knowledge? Just because they are different from us and at ends due to current political events, it doesn't give us a right to slander them in any manner - the same way it doesn't give them a right to slander us. If anything as Muslims we should take example of our religion and the Holy Qu'ran - by being the "bigger man", if you will, and not generalising and accusing them of anything whether right or wrong.

If you do, then they have ground to stand on when they insult us - and it just turns into a vicious cycle of childish bitterness.

I agree completely. As an American I witness bias of the Islamic culture way too much in my daily life. So many people in America are uneducated about most of the junk they debate about and it's rediculous to put up with. We should be building connections, not slice each other down to fuel more violence.

I know more about Islam then most Muslims and I must say that I really do dislike Muslims. I haven't grown up in an anti-muslim house hold or anything like that. Muslims hate Jews and Christians, they will take over the entire earth because Bible prophesy predicts it (and it hasn't been wrong so far). The majority of Americans are of Christian/Catholic religion, an enemy of Islam, but not THEE enemy. Muslims are sworn to destroy Jews whether they know it or not (if they don't their rather ignorant of Muhammad's teachings). Seeing Jews and Christians are being killed on a daily bases (mostly Jews) I don't see why I should even try to get along with a Muslim until they decide to stop shooting rockets into Isreal. Speak for youself, not America

"The last day will not come until the Muslims confront the Jews and the Muslims destroy them, even the rocks and the trees will cry out 'Muslim, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him.'"

You know, Northern Africa was christian once, someone like St. Augustin came from there.
Look how the copts are surpressed today in Egypt or the Bahais in Iran.
How did Islam came to power in Persia in the first place?
Who destroyed Hindu-Shrines when conquering India?
Who invaded Creta, Sicilly, Spain?
Who murdered the entire population of Malta during that time (not the only place it was)?
Who conquered huge parts of southeast Europe and tried to capture Vienna twice? Who blocked the Silk Road between Asia and Europe, or do you think the Europeans sailed for fun over the oceans?
Who destroid Buddism in Central Asia, fe in Afghanistan? Who looted Monte Cassino and many places like it?
Who where the Barbary pirates and the Almoravides and who the Zandj?
Do you know Cela Kula?

Exactly. It's not just Americans though - I mean, I'm a Muslim but I live in the West. I was born here. I see biased and ignorant points of view when I return home to the Middle East by some people there.

Though I see the political message of the cartoon, as well as the message of the artist, I don't fully agree with it. I understand how culture and religion are so deeply entrenched in one another in the Middle East, in Islam. And its something we shouldn't forget - something we shouldn't reject. But that also does not give the right or message to reject every other culture that seems alien.

Their culture are a threat to the Islamic culture and create secularism in Middle-East. And I donΒ΄t want to see the Islamic values and culture being replaced by a such a low-standing culture as the american. And I say that they shall keep their liberal values within their own borders. I donΒ΄t care that they build mosques in their own lands, Islam is just a religion for them.

I agree. Just tonight I watched an evening special of a U.S. journalist reporting live from Baghdad, and the message that was constantly given to the Americans was that the Iraqi people in that area were happy for the opccupation and didn't want the American soldiers to leave. how much of the broadcast was based on facts I do not know. Seeing art like this and just openning your eyes you probably will be open to a different story, but most Americans stick to their ignorance and refuse to educate themselves on worldly affairs. I think that this fact is what saddens me the most.

One female I befriended in college (we were both in Graphic Design and Media Communications) took the highest level Calculus to complete her math requirement because she didn't find it a challenge. On the whole the parents don't let their children grow up psychologically lax as they do here, either. most Arab kids are on par with the European children, which can NOT be said of their American counterparts...
