Description Ivanhoe Night - May, 2011
Acrylic on linen canvas, 10" x 10"

The first version of the Ivanhoe was meant to evoke the lunchbag crowd of workers that frequent the place. This version, at night, signifies a mattress.

The Ivanhoe is also a very reasonably priced backpacker's hostel a block away from the big Pacific Central train and bus station. In this version , I gave it a decidedly Van Gogh Starry Night look with warmly lit windows and a bit of easy sag to the walls, like a comfortable mattress.

LOL! Your descriptions and comments are great! I've never been there except for viewing the outside which is cool but I've heard the stories!

I spent many a drunken night at the 'hoe back in the day. There aren't too many places where people try to sell you a side of ham or a block of cheese.

I know, right? Amazing how that stuff just kinda ... falls off trucks. I remember getting offered a breadmaker, and the seller even had it tucked in his coat just like they do in cartoons. Kind of a bizarre thing to sell but I guess, er, pickers-up of fallen-truck things can't be choosy.
