The thing I especially love about this painting as well as how beautifully it has been painted (the colour, detail, tonal values etc) is the mystery it conveys: is she just having a conversation with someone outside the frame? Has she been startled? If so, by what? What is she looking at? And how is she feeling? Intriguing. . . .
