Description I've been turning into a fan of the Vocaloids little by little, ever since I found out about Hatsune Miku right here on DeviantART. And somehow the newcomer upbeat japanese music, and the old favourite Nordic Metal, have formed the unlikely couple as my two favourite genres of music.

And now I finally decided to draw my first Vocaloid fanart picture, and of course I had to draw Hatsune Miku first. I'll see about drawing Kagamine Rin at some point too, and if I'll ever draw a third one, it'll be of Megpoid Gumi.

I drew this with colour pencils, finished it with white gel pen, and did the basic colour correction on photoshop. I hope you like this rather strange colouring technique of mine.

Very nice coloring my friend, truly amazig fom my point of view! , i like her skirt, how yo shaded it and how clean the work looks, specially her face and her hair. Very impressive, nice work! 8D By the way, how many time did it took you? Did you used finelinears or pencil to make the sketch?

Good to know you like the colours. They seem to look totally different depending on the monitor. The colours look far worse on a laptop flatscreen than they did with the big monitor I used when editing. And I'm afraid most of the people didn't even see this like it was meant to be.

Well, I guess I can tell you my little "secret" about the lineart. I did do the penciling scetch first like always, and then inked it with fineliners. But after that, I used glass and a strong light source to trace my finished lineart to another paper using colour pencils.

Then I just coloured the new copy of my picture, and you can see the result up there. And if the colouring goes horribly wrong at the first time, you can just use the "master" to make a new copy, and start all over.

This took me about two weeks to draw, since it was drawn on an A3 size paper, so it's two times as big as a printing paper. Of course I had to draw this one bit at a time, to minimize the rushing, so that is the main reason it took so long.

Well, usually drawings looks better on the monitors than in the eral life of course, the scanners took a good part on them too, for example i like my drawings more on the computer (in some cases) than real life. But we have to be carefull about scanners as well, what i do when my scanner wants to ruin the colours is that i color VERY stronger, so the scanner willnot do it's little tricks.

Ohh, what i do is that i use fineliners, very thin ones, but that way you do the lineart takes you a lot of time right? Because inking the drawing and doing it again... should take you hours, i think. There are some tablets in wich you put the drawing and that tablet has a super light from below, did you know them?

A3 is REALLY big. i wouldn't finish a drawing in that size of paper, well a background would take ages. A simple one will be quick! Do you susually took so long on your drawings?

Personally I never like the way my drawings turn out in the computer. The scanning gives a different perspective that usually tends to show you how many mistakes there are.

The scanners really tend to ruin the colours, but you should NEVER draw your pictures on the terms of your scanner. Just scan the picture like it is, take the picture to photoshop, and then increase the shadows, midtones and highlights so that it looks more like the original. Then just increase the contrast a bit and/or edit the balance between red, blue and green colours. That way you can make it look like you want, and not how the scanner wants.

And about the table you mentioned... I have that kind of tablet myself, although it's self made, and I get the light from my standard tabletop lamp. Since the white drawing table reflects the light very well, I don't need an additional "super" light source.

It doesn't matter if you use big or small fineliners, since it really doesn't take you any longer either way. As far as I know, thin fineliners should be used for hair, and thick ones for objects close to the viewer. Everything else should be somewhere in between. Although I've never considered myself to be very good with the lineart.

Yup, A3 is big, but it also gives you a lot of freedom to draw. A4 always tends to run out of space. Back when I used to draw in A4, it took me 3 days to finish a drawing, but A3 always take 1-2 weeks. But at the moment I'm working on an A4 size picture for the first time in 11 months, so it should be done a bit quicker.

Well, thankfully my scanner is not the kind who ruins drawings "so much", but in some way computer seems to give another prespective.

Anyways, that have helped me to improve my coloring skills anyways. I am challenging the fucking scaner: "Try to ruin this! No, you CAN'T" and i have to admit that i have discovered new techniques and stuff! lol I don't like using Photoshop tools but there are so ocasions that i don't have any option and i use them of course.

Ohh io see what about that table, well when we have some tools we shall better use them, that table is from my mom anyways! Nice technique you have by the way!

Well, since my drawings are very edtailed, while doing eyes and faces i use a "black ballpoint pen" i found them more usefull as fineliners! Since the ink of the fineliners can be spread and absorved on the paper more easily.

Yeah, A3 gives a lot of freedm, but you spent a lot of time idneed. I would like to do a drawing in A3 paper, but i will see what i came from, first of all: IMPROVE.

You know, I could try using a black ballpoint pen for the smallest details at some too. I would've never thought about using one unless you mentioned it.

That should make the facial features easier to draw. Thanks for the tip.

Well, you should try i totally recomend them. They are very usefull when it comes to do details, more usefull than the tools who are "made" for that purpose.
