Well that's the beauty of art I think. It's open to interpretation. I mean of course you have an intended message, I think anybody with eyes can tell that, but hey, we all have a personal stake in any analysis we make. It must have stirred a negative emotion in him to label it as "self fellating," and to use the extreme example of threatened violence to counteract your intended point. To myself it's pretty clear it's about having your own voice and individuality (specifically as a woman?) Either way you did good, and hey, he gave some lols.Β

no, yeah, i totally agree. as i said, it was irrelevant to my own interpretation, but it was important to him. your views on it are very much my own. it's just that this piece seemed to attract a lot of negativeness, although it wasn't the point. as an amateur artist, i don't get a lot of interaction on my posted pieces, especially when it's not fanart. yet this one had that comment, and on tumblr there was this other guy who reblogged it saying that my worth "wasn't very much". i even got anon messages with similar content. i'm not used to these things, but it was definitely interesting to see how a piece about self-love and self-care (and feminism, in a sense) managed to attract that kind of reaction from people who don't even know the story behind it.

Yeah it's obvious we have a fair way to go as far as equal treatment of women if it really has people up in arms that a picture of a woman with boxing gloves and a message about respecting individuality even exists. I know that feeling when an artwork garners attention, albeit I've never had any that was negative. You should (At least in my own opinion in order to spin this positively) see this as a reason to continue creating artwork similar to this, because it pushes against the type of people who would scrutinize the message of the artwork itself, and not the actual artwork. Not to say people who discuss the messages of artwork are wrong, but inherently there is something to be criticized in people who would see this artwork and decide that the message is invalid. I highly doubt a man wearing boxing gloves instead would have people so worked up.Β
So keep at it! Don't let anything they say stop you, you're gathering attention to your artwork whether they like or not through their comments, it's a win/win for you!Β

"I highly doubt a man wearing boxing gloves instead would have people so worked up."Β i agree with this 100%. i often see motivational posts with guys looking tough and inspiring positivity, and no one feels the need to counter it. they just take it. but putting a woman in the same position seems to attract some negative reactions. it's very unfortunate. but yes, it really did make me feel like i should create more positive content. unfortunately people still get worked up over self love, and think of it as arrogance. still, i hope that one day we'll all learn to love ourselves - and to love other people just as much!
