nice job - what kind of pen did you use?

Thanks DragonPress. This picture was drawn with Sakura Pigma Microns: [link] I don't remember which size exactly, but it was probably the 03 and/or the 05.

YUP! those are my favorite ink weapons of choice! Its interesting looking at your work because if i had done the same pictures as you, there are areas you have done completely as hatching that i would have made flat black....not that i'm saying its bad, its a difference in style and i think its pretty nifty to look at (though it may drive me crazy if i tried it myself!)

I also have a set of Faber-Castell Pitt pens, which I like a lot, but the mircrons are also my favourite. (Although the printing on the pens seems to wear off quickly when they are used a lot, which is mildly annoying.)

When colouring something flat black, I've found I need to plan ahead carefully because once the ink is down any overlap will be slightly darker, which can result in some unintentional lines in the shading. Hatching everything doesn't eliminate this problem, but it does make it easier to work with. However, I mainly just like the uniform look hatching everything gives me. I did use some flat colouring in this picture: [link]

YES! the printing DOES wear off pretty darn fast - but i actually found a way to use that to my advantage since i don't have a lot of money to keep a big supply on me, but can't afford to have a pen wear out while traveling a couple hundred miles from home. I just look into my pencil case and look to see if its worn off - if it has, then i go and buy two new ones of that size and continue to use the old one until it DOES ear wear off!

as for your picture - its very nice! i can see what you mean though - there is definitly a difference in ink quality between the lines and the flat black. it actually kinda looks like you used two different inks - which i've done before.

when i get a flat black that looks 'faded' like that (and therefor will show any lines that go through it) i go back with one of a couple of things or combination of things:

Sharpie
Brush Pen
Ink bottle with real brush

Sometimes i don't even bother using the pen to start - i start with the sharpie in big expanses of area that i want covered and then smooth it out with the brush option if necessary (which, if its a commission and not a print, then its necessary like in This picture )

If its going to be a print, iv'e realized that most issues get flattened out by the photocopier AND i have a way of using photoshop that eliminates that issue as well.

Interesting idea to use the fading printing as a way of showing the level of ink left. If I recall correctly my first set of microns (on my second now) still worked fine for some time after the printing faded, but it's a better way of gauging the wear than nothing.

Thanks for the suggestions on working with flat blacks. Of the items you listed, I only have sharpies in black, and I don't like to use them with my other pens because the ink looks different. When you put another coat of ink on a solid area that looks faded, do you have to be careful that it doesn't become darker than the rest of the picture? I now wonder if it would look good if I put down a layer sharpie and then coated it in micron crosshatches. Perhaps I will experiment!

Cheers!

the sharpie ink is DEFINITELY different the micron ink - but you can buy micron brush pens which use the same ink as the pens themselves - when they are NEW the tips are really nice (but they fray rather fast!!!) and while i don't like the brushes by themselves (they dry so fast that they look like they streak sometimes, so unless you're going for a certain effect....) when you add them on top of the sharpie it fixes the color.

Good luck with your experiments! i hope to see some
