Description Apologies for the absence. I've recently found myself completely obsessed with the Orange Box. I've never been into PC gaming so I managed to miss the phenomenon that is Half Life 2. Always wanted to play it, never got around to it. Got an Xbox in december and ordered the game. Started playing it probably a month ago and kinda just didn't stop. Played HL2, ep one and two pretty much back to back. Damn it's an amazing game, hard to believe how old it is. Also played through Portal in almost one sitting. Loved it to bits. The still alive song brought a tear to my eye ( [link] < for anyone wanting to reminisce). And now I finally know what all the fecking 'the cake is a lie' crap is about

Anyways, sorry, I digress. That was more of a journal entry.

This is Verity Quesada. The half werewolf sniper chick from the one shot (tentatively titled 'Security' I'm doing for Oztaku's annual. this is as much an experiment in style as it is an exercise char design. I'm going for a splattered watercolour effect for the comic, and I'm kinda digging the direction it's heading. Half of what you see here is accidental, I had an idea of what I wanted but mistakenly throwing things on different layers showed me something much better. It needs a bit of tuning, but I'm looking forward to seeing how everything turns out in the end.

As for Verity, I was really wanting to give her and intricate and interesting haircut, but I couldn't find inspiring enough ref so she is stuck with 'generic Rocksalt cut number 4'. I also want to give her heaps more details like accessories, tats, piercings and stuff. But this will do for now until I can think of stuff that isn't stoopid.

Anyways, as per usual, I've let my devwatch skyrocket again. Best get to that. Anyone done anything interesting lately?

I can't believe you never played HL2 until recently. You do know it came out roughly the same time as doom 3?

Half werewolf sniper chick? Sure there's enough in that?

Looking a bit more gritty and less pencil-ly than your usual. It's a good render. I like the faded look to it; like it's been left in the sun so the magenta and yellows have faded in the light.

I've never been a PC gamer, and I've only semi recently got a 360... so I haven't had the opportunity until now despite always being interested. I've never played Doom 3 either If it hasn't been on a Sony or Nintendo platform in the last 5 years, I haven't played it. Except for Warcraft

And you're right 'Half werewolf sniper chick' is a little thinly layered... needs more... maybe she could also be a lesbian catholic as well?

Yeah, I'm looking forward to playing around with this texturing. I especially like the right side of her hair where it goes from yellow to purple and how the texture blends into it. Entirely randomly generated... but awesome

I have adored my time with the Orange Box, I had no idea how much I would dig all the Half-life stuff, which is all I bought it for. Had no intention of playing Portal, thought it was a multiplayer FPS. But it turned out to be the most fun puzzle games ever Highly recommended. Although, as you say, I have no advice for system specs. Played it on the Box.

Portal gave me motion sickness... especially after I put one portal in the wall and one in the floor just below it and jumped through...

Anyway, nice one mate. Pose is really cool and sassy looking and I'm digging the "splattered watercolour" effect as you put it.

Heh, "Generic Rocksalt Cut #4" ... fortunately those look pretty good, you should open a hair salon. Funny though isn't it how we get trapped into modes of doing stuff... then look back at past work and go " hey, I way overused that particular element"

Firstly: OH SHI!!!!111!1oneoneoneeleventyone

This really rocks man, I'd say 100% experiment successful! I really love the look you've achieved with this, and I can't wait to read this one shot (your participation actually guarantees that I'll be purchasing the anthology)

Really great work man. I love her design, I love the colours, I love it all. Nicely drawn breasts also, great shape. She looks nice and natural (almost braless), which is super cool. (I kind of feel like a pervert now after saying that =S ). Nice work on the material folds on her shirt too.

Ok, now for the crit:
She's missing a thumb from her right hand, making he grip on the gun look, well, wrong. Also I feel that her trigger finger should be futher forward, as how it is now it is kind of inline with the fingers holding the grip. I guess she could be pulling the trigger? Anyways that's all I've got.

Keep up the awesome work dude, and I hope to see some more characters from this one shot soon(ish).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lazytigerart In reply to wraithdragon [2009-03-10 23:48:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm really happy with the look. It may be a whole different story trying to apply it successfully to a comic page, but I'm looking forward to it

Takes brave man to consider and comment so exhaustively on the merits of drawn breasts. I salute you sir!

Yeah, i drew the hand in the vague position it would be long before the rifle and it had a thumb then. When I rummaged up ref for the rifle, the hand grip was way too fat for the thumb to be reaching around it. So I left it out and had it so she was was supporting the weight of the rifle on her arm. But regardless, you're right, it does look odd. Although, I've come to realise there are about 3 or 4 major design elements I've managed to entirely forget to include in this pic so in my mind it's already null and void. The watercolour texture thing has gone down well though, so it has been successful in its own right.

Thanks for the crit though, dood. Most appreciated.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wraithdragon In reply to lazytigerart [2009-03-16 05:58:19 +0000 UTC]

It certainly turned out kick arse!

Well, when it comes to breasts, I do consider myself a brave man! Willing to exhaust the merits of all breasts be they great or small....

The thumb was the only "design flaw" I detected, though there was something odd about her torso/belly button at first glance, but at second glance (and some mental rationalisation) it looked fine. So these ones you talk about must be obscure to all but you.

TAIL!

(*Said since nothing is going to stop me making that joke with you. )

For the record, she isn't a "furry". Neko maybe, but no furry.

Nice image here mate, she does look good with the character you have in the story. The way you have her here makes her werewolf elements feel more like they are a natural part of her outfit (an almost crazy "hipstar" thing going on with it) then the result of anything that might have/is happening to her.

I was going to suggest that if you had wanted to add any details to her body (tat's, etc) then a scar/s would have been a good start...but once I noticed that you make the tail work with her outfit I started to wonder if any marks might be right for her. They could be a leftover from any older image (any tats of note), or hidden under her clothes, but that depends on if you want to show any scars on her (like claw marks).

Oh, and one question about the tail...over/under/spilt in what she is wearing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lazytigerart In reply to Squato [2009-03-10 04:26:34 +0000 UTC]

I knew no one would get a kick out of this pic more than you... for many different reasons

Isn't neko the Japanese word for cat? Or is it the generally accepted internet term for people with animal features like ears and tails and crap?

I've just realised that I've entirely forgotten a bunch of stuff. I'm still undecided on ears, but she's meant to have a wolf paw, or forearm. How did I forget that?

And yeah, good call with the scars, as having previously been a full werewolf there would have been many opportunities for that sort of thing. Only problem is coming up with new ways to implement them... as they are a very overused element.

The tail is... um... under the skirt... I guess. Stop asking such technical questions

Anyways dood, I'm really looking forward to doing this now that I have a clearer idea of style. Should be fun.

Squato In reply to lazytigerart [2009-03-10 12:57:01 +0000 UTC]

I say nothing, and there is nothing you can do to make me say anything...no matter how you may tempt me.

And yes that is what it is meant to mean, but as you guessed the meaning has changed somewhat nowdays thanks to the net so that it can also mean images of (whatever you want to call it) which has an animal tail/s, animal ear/s, and or animal paw/s. Generally either is ok (if you happen to not be the type to shot people down who say crap like that), but it is really up to you.

Don't worry, that happens. Ran into that a few times when writing something and got so lost in what was going on that I kinda forgot to give background on some things.

As to the scars, your call on them. They can add character/etc, but can be overused as you said.

Got ya, and I only asked because it is a point with characters like this about how some items of clothing might be worn on them, more so if the design made by the artist is either odd or very, very wrong (example, the tail hole is too small, etc). Blame the fact this discussion has come up many times in the past if you want to blame anything.

Good to know you have things much clearer now, I await what will come.

lazytigerart In reply to Squato [2009-03-10 23:37:21 +0000 UTC]

Verity was also supposed to have phat headphones sitting around her neck... guess I forgot about that too

I've had an idea about that details. I think I'm going to have some sort of shamanistic tats on her arm and lower back that are magically holding back the transformation. So it's kind of like the lower left arm and tail area is lost to the werewolf, but the tats prevent the rest turning, and keep her human. I have a sketchy back story about Verity and her old partner being attacked on a job and both getting turned. They both go to see a shaman about undoing the curse but unfortunately he's not very good. Verity's transformation starts to slowly return, and the partner gets reversed so that he is always a werewolf except during the full moon

I may have some across wrong with the 'Stop asking such technical questions' statement. I was more from embarrassment that I hadn't really thought about it The skirt is so short that a tail would probably lift it revealingly all the time... may have to put some more thought into that.

Squato In reply to lazytigerart [2009-03-11 10:16:54 +0000 UTC]

You are making mistakes all over the place from the looks of it mate. No rushy next time.

Interesting idea with the tats, and I can see backstory working for her from what you have shown so far. In fact I can see the fact it is failing becoming a great issue in time, maybe getting into things she shouldn't (like fights) faster, becoming more aggressive as time goes on as the wolf side takes over, etc. In fact I'm even wondering what the long term damage might have been to have done that (and even if the general view about doing things like that to hold off becoming a werewolf is a bad thing since it makes them less controllable if it fails (redirected chi, etc).

Oh, and I'm laughing at the idea that the old partner came out that way. It either means he only pop's in for a few hours each month to "help" in/on a case (which might be interesting if there was any feeling between them, more so since she has a new partner). Plus I can't help thinking someone might call him a "werehuman".

And got ya. Hope I didn't sound too hard on you about it, just have seen a lot of fail because of this point (as you worked out). Hope what you work out comes out nice, just try to remember weather or not the tail moves or not (like the ears, this can be a great way of showing emotion...something that might be an issue for her since her profession means she shouldn't). If you need help working things out about this, I can point out a few good names to you.

lazytigerart In reply to Squato [2009-03-31 01:46:03 +0000 UTC]

I have a feeling the tats are going to take a long time to resolve for me to be happy with them... in which case I best get to it

And yeah, I plan to have lots of fun with the partner. Still undecided on the relationship as he will be quite a lot older and that just makes it extra creepy. He'll probably be more like a father figure of sorts.

All good points.
