Description Finally! This took forever to do. I used [link] by as my reference (but I drew and colored everything myself). I'm not talented enough to imagine something and just sketch it; I need references. When I was drawing the lineart, I actually drew it upside down to make it turn out better.

I know there are a bunch of mistakes, but I am tired of working on this anymore! Please give me heavy critique/tips to make my art better because I really want to improve!

Fireworks 2004 (because that's what I have!), plain old mouse (no tablet; don't have one), too many hours to remember.

Edit: This shows a bunch of other versions (in scraps): [link]

cool work! i guess maybe you could try to do more of an anatomy study of wolves and humans(being the very essential bits of a werewolf). just with pencil.
according to my experiences, and my grandmom's(who is a well known artist) practicing the basics with the good old pencil and paper always works!!
good luck i hope i helped someone..

Amazing what you can do with a mouse if you set your mind to it - but take it from me, it results in almost getting permanent RSI eventually -favs- I've never tried to draw upside down. I guess it makes the drawer less likely to 'guess' how details go?

Yeah, that's how it worked out; I had to draw what I saw and not just use what I already knew.

This wasn't actually drawn by mouse (not the lineart anyway). Coloring was though.

Thanks for the !

Oooh okay! Haha I did all my drawings and colouring by mouse, except the spotted cat thing and some traditional stuff. I know how much it hurts the wrist; I went and bought a tablet. But it's still really good, and I'm very interested by the upside down thing! I love the 'Shift happens' piece, always wanted to locate the shirt. And you're welcome

I have a tablet; it gathers dust very nicely! I might get rid of it here soon as I've given up on drawing...

Why have you given up on drawing?

lazywolf In reply to Kirk-Hammett [2010-02-27 01:55:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, because I'm not good at it. I'm pretty sure I could be if I really put time and effort into it, but at this point there are other things I should be devoting my time to (like figuring out a career, finding a wife, finishing school, etc.).

I'm already somewhat OK (I guess) at writing, so I'll stick to my guns.

Well if you don't enjoy it too much, fair enough I know I've been lazy with my own drawing. Very lazy. I write a LOT more than I draw, but I don't publish the writing on here, no way. What are you studying if you don't mind me asking?

lazywolf In reply to Kirk-Hammett [2010-03-01 09:42:32 +0000 UTC]

It's not that I wouldn't enjoy it, it's that my skill level is too low and I have too much else I should be doing to justify the time I'd have to spend getting better.

Just generals; still don't know what I want to major in

I know all about being way too busy to do anything but sit around or sleep when you have even a little bit of spare time. And ah - at least you're still in the early stages. I got halfway through a science masters degree then switched to journalism. I've now got two science degrees and yet doing a completely different thing. Big change, huh? Good luck with your choices - hopefully the right one will jump out at you

It looks almost as if you traced Goldenwolf's "shift happens". I like how you added your stile to it though. I think the hands look awkward even from goldenwolf's. I say allot about hands, don't I?
I guess thats because thats where I am trying to improve.

You have potential for a 10/10 if you finish him and the background.

lazywolf In reply to jmillart [2009-04-11 08:17:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know it looks like that. I did no tracing whatsoever, but drew it by sight. I know it's the same, and now looking back I wonder what I was thinking. Also though, since werewolves don't exist, there aren't any photos to use as references. Looking at lifelike art was the next best thing I guess. Someday I'll get to the point where I can just draw my own, but not yet...

Good job though. You did do a great job. I have seen your page defining your stile of werewolf, so when you get to the point of drawing without references, you'll do great.

I still think you should finish this one. Also, I think you might like Yellow-Eyes fur tutorial. Mix that with your fur stile you already have and I think this peace would look great and be the realistic stile you like.

Glad you like my werewolf site! I don't think I'll finish this one; I'll just move forward with new pics. I just got a Wacom tablet, so that should be fun.

This is pretty good the only thing i would say is the lines look kind on weird and also the hand on the right... -> ya right... the curves in the finger makes the claws look kind of off center and awkward...
otherwise this is awesome!

Looks pretty good for a start. I like messing around with drawing stuff upside down too.
I really would recommend practicing more by drawing your own stuff though. Practice is the only way you are going to get there, after all. Also, I don’t know Goldenwolf’s policy on these things, but many artists dislike having their work referenced this heavily, even if you did nothing to the original image (I could tell immediately from the thumbnail what picture it was based on).

Thanks! About the originality... Like I said in the description, I have a hard time just drawing from my head; I have to see something. In the future I hope to get better, though.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that she didn't mind as long as a reference was made to the original pic...

I'd say this looks great! I use the upside-down drawing method myself sometimes. It really helps.

The two things I think you could change that would make this outstanding are as such:

1. Even though you seemed to use the upside-down method, your were looks a bit... longer than Goldie's. It's almost as if you had drawn hers identically, but then at the last minute, skewed the canvas just a bit so that your wolf seems more narrow and long. Take a look again at your reference - it's a very minute detail that I think you only notice when looking at both images.

2. The details in this are great, but the artwork as a whole would be more convincing if your shading didn't make it appear so two-dimensional. Right now it almost looks as if this was done by gluing construction paper in layers on top of each other because of the shading on the bottom edges of legs, paws, etc. Your light sources are right. The shading is just a bit lacking, but that's nothing a little practice won't solve!

You asked for critique, but I hope that doesn't sound too harsh. This really IS a great image. All it needs is a little more oomph!

Thank you for all the great advice; it really helps a lot! This was my first real shot at digital shading; I need to study that a lot more.

As for being too long, you're right! I remember thinking that just after doing the lineart, but I'd forgotten until you mentioned it again! Here--I tried a quick repair buy just smashing the whole image-([link] ) what do you think; better?

Oh, this was your first? Then that really isn't bad at all. At least you didn't go airbrush-happy.

Wow, it's amazing how much better that looks just by changing the proportions! And you're quite welcome for the help.
