Description Memories of days gone by in Youngstown, Ohio. A small mill switcher and a fireless 0-4-0t sit on a siding with a slag car just outside of a mill. When I was here last year both locomotives were burried under a pile of scrap.

My 300 Deviation!

Steel Mills once ruled the Mahoning Valley, but all that changed on September 19, 1977 when Youngstown Sheet and Tube announced that it would be closing down. This would be the beging of the end for many local jobs. Over the next few years some 25,000 jobs would be lost and September 17, 1977 would forever be known as Black Monday.

That is such a cool little diesel! I hope they'll get saved...

They're saved.
In fact they are in a museum of sorts right now.

How about a photo in their current state?

I wonder if there is a train restoration site anywhere because I think those two would be perfect cannidates.
Also, I give an enthuseastic thumbs up for how you took the picture.

There is group in the area, and I think they might already own these, but haven't moved them to their site yet. I really hoped they are saved.
Thanks!

What a waste of history! Sad. And the little diesel switcher reminds me the Athern Hustlers of model railroad history. And what city park wouldn't look better with a 0-2-0 sitting on 30 feet of track?

I think they might save these. About a year or two ago they were burried in a scrap pile. There is still some hope for them yet.

Cool, but sad shot! Reminds me of some places around Pittsburgh.

Thanks! There are a lot of memories tied up in that shot. Youngstown was 2nd in steel only to Pittsburgh so both cities have a lot in common.

You're welcome Lane! When I was in art school we went out to Youngstown a few times for concerts at the Tomorrow Club, I remember Youngstown having that gritty hard working feel. Are any of the old blast furnaces still there?

I think we only have one or two now. Youngstown has to be the capital city of The Rust Belt.
I think that the Bruce Springsteen song "Youngstown" describes the fall of the steel industry the bet.

looks like those could be restored

LDLAWRENCE In reply to Joseph-W-Johns [2007-12-25 05:51:00 +0000 UTC]

Maybe cosmeticly. They are in pretty rough shape.

But stuff in worse shape has been restored

I just wanted to let you know that these went to a museum. Oh and I made a mistake, that 0-4-0 is a fireless engine.
