Description "Confessions on a Digital Dance Floor"

Okay, I'll start.

I confess ... to briefly (*very* briefly) contemplating the use of a lens-flare filter on this composition.

Who wants to go next?

You'll need a modeling program like Blender, Lightwave, or Maya, and sufficient time/stubborness/practice to master it.

I currently use Hexagon 3D, myself.

LDragon In reply to Wiliam1bobberson [2009-09-02 12:07:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it is. And you'll probably feel discouraged early on. But the same is true for learning almost any technical skillset.

Very cool as always, although I am still wondering if Renamon will be ready for us other poser users soon. Still keep up the teasing, it's nice seeing your stuff again and again.

Awesome work ^^ I'm currently working on learning 3D modeling myself, well more of the animating than making.

Very cool 3D model. For a moment I thought that it was a hand drawn image, The Cell Shading is extremely well done. May I suggest a couple of pointers? The shadow that Renamon casts on the floor is only coherent with the light source placed on the upper hand corner, it would look great if you could place shadows that correspond to the other 3 light sources in the image and that said lightsources casted red, blue and green onto her boby accordingly. Again the modeling is great, one of the best I've seen in a long time.

Suggestions duly noted.

The scene, as rendered, actually had only one light source. Unfortunately, the cel shader materials I'm using are unaffected by coloured lighting, but the floor shadow is easily fixed.

I just got an interesting idea for a possible way around that limitation: Use only one white light at a time and do separate renders for each light source you want. Then use PhotoShop (or equivalent) to multiply each image with a different solid color (thus simulating colored lights) and overlap the resulting images (I'd probably use the "screen" layer mode in PSP but partial opacity could work too) to create the final multi-color composite.

It might just be wacky enough to work! (In fact, now I want to try this with my camera.)

I think my video editing software can do the same thing, too, in case we want to try this effect on full-motion renders. That'd be an interesting experiment!

I see that you added the other shadows, well done. A shame about the technical limitations of the shader. Either way great job and lets hope for the developer to patch or updated the shader for colored lighting effects. BTW do you use Maya, 3DStudioMax or something else? I've been thinking about trying out 3D modeling in the future, but I'm asking around to those that actually work with 3D to see which program would better fit my needs.

My current modeling apps are MilkShape 3D and Hexagon 2. I do my rigging, animation, and rendering in Poser 7.

I originally used Caligari's trueSpace software, but I didn't care for the direction they were taking the user interface. If you'd like to give it a try, the latest version is now freeware .

Maya and 3DS Max are both excellent choices if you're looking for a complete package solution, though they're a tad expensive. For those on a budget, Carrara offers similar features at a more affordable price, and also has direct support for Poser and DAZ Studio.

Thanks for the info. Wow, I knew of other 3D applications but it seems to be more than I thought.
