Description PROLOGUE--Slipping Into the Past

"No!  Come back!  Please!" He cried as loudly as he could, but it was useless.  He could only stare into the foggy, unforgiving chasm that swallowed his companion.

He shook from the sudden twists his mind and emotions were making, continuing to stare into the emptiness for what seemed like an eternity, tears slipping from his face into the same fate of his companion.  He didn't even notice the crackling and snapping above him until he was jerked downwards slightly.  He snapped out of his sad trance and whipped his attention to his right hand, still clutching the rope.  To his horror, the rope was on the verge of dividing itself in half.

Acting quickly, he scrambled up the side of the cliff, letting go of the rope as he pulled himself onto the flat ground.  He sluggishly pulled himself away from the drop-off, still shaking.  As he reached a large boulder, he leaned against it, falling asleep from his exhaustion both physically and emotionally.
