This picture works well in a large format. I like the composition choice to bring the water in just off center and have it move out through the middle of the first and second area of thirds at the bottom of the frame. It is beautifully sharp. I love the texture on the rivers edge at the right side of the photo. This also works very well as a black and white photo for the same reason. The dark shadows leave a feeling of mystery or early morning/late day lighting which lends a nice feeling to this shot. Very nicely done.

Your welcome.

I am kinda new to deviant art as you can see. Can you tell me how the critique works. I did request them for several photos as I uploaded them. Do I need to do something more?

Thanks ever so much.

Superb usage of lines. Maybe a touch faster on the ss next time to get more detail out of the water in the fg. Well done here

what lens did you shoot these with? 10-20? or is this a pano of sorts? its just so wide! feels like its coming right at me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leavenotrase In reply to EmilyKPhotography [2009-09-24 16:23:06 +0000 UTC]

yup the Canon 10-22. The trick is to find the right height above the ground to make that feeling as dramatic as possible. I don't always do this on purpose, sometimes it just happens. Thanks

If you can, get the Canon 10-22mm, it is incredible sharp and very good quality. Some people say it should have an "L" rating. In fact before you get one let me know, I'm hoping to go full frame at the beginning of next year so I might want to sell mine.

well, i shoot with a Nikon D80, i don't think the lenses are compatible? i was probably going to go with Sigma.

EmilyKPhotography In reply to leavenotrase [2009-09-26 08:35:56 +0000 UTC]

lol alright. do 10-20's perform well for close ups as well? macro?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leavenotrase In reply to EmilyKPhotography [2009-09-26 13:19:24 +0000 UTC]

Not really, they can focus pretty close but there is distortion to deal with and you have to get really close to your subject. I would love to get a macro lens but it's not on the top of my list yet.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EmilyKPhotography In reply to leavenotrase [2009-09-26 23:16:03 +0000 UTC]

yeah i think i would rather have a wider angle lens than a macro at the moment. i'm just totally in love with bokeh and want something that performs better than my 18-135. 18 is pretty wide, but...not wide enough!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leavenotrase In reply to EmilyKPhotography [2009-09-27 00:29:29 +0000 UTC]

I must warn you, ultra wide angle takes a little getting used to. You really have to pay attention to everything in the frame because you get a ton of stuff inside that field of view. Once you've used it for a while you start seeing everything that wide. I love it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EmilyKPhotography In reply to leavenotrase [2009-09-27 08:20:59 +0000 UTC]

well i gotta get one to get used to it! i think i'm gonna go for it. whats a good sigma macro lens? any opinions?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leavenotrase In reply to EmilyKPhotography [2009-09-27 13:10:40 +0000 UTC]

If I get a macro lens it would be something between 100mm and 180mm. Just looking at the Sigma site I would have to say the 105mm F2.8 would be a great lens. You should check out this site for a good reviews on lenses. [link]

well the kit lens on my nikon is 18-135. thats pretty wide, but i'd like it to be wider. and i can technically use it for macro? it just feels weird having the lens zoomed all the way out and trying to get in close to something. is that how its supopsed to work? lol i have very little technical knowledge on this sort of stuff.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

EmilyKPhotography In reply to EmilyKPhotography [2009-09-29 00:03:01 +0000 UTC]

i think so! lol i should really take a class or read a book. sometimes i don't know how i get some of my shots because 80% of the time i'm shooting for aesthetics and not paying any attention to the technical aspects. i think if i learned what the tech specs can do for a picture i coule really take some great shots.

but for now, i think i'll stick with going wider, and seeing if i can duplicate some mild macro with my 18-135. i do also have a 70-300, never knew that could be used for macro...? lol thanks for the help Josh.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

leavenotrase In reply to EmilyKPhotography [2009-09-28 20:39:18 +0000 UTC]

A macro lens is a lens that can capture a 1:1 ratio, or life size. I have a 70-300 that can be used as a macro but it doesn't do 1:1. The best thing to do is zoom it in to around 135mm or close to it and have your aperture set at the lowest it goes to give the shot the shortest depth of field. (Blurry background and foreground) You have to make sure you focus exactly on your subject. With a true macro lens you really get an incredible effect because it focuses so close and gives a dramatic life size feel to the shot. If you have a macro lens like a 100mm then you can stay a little farther away from the subject and still achieve that effect but if you get a smaller lens like a 50mm then you have to get right on top of it. Hope that helps
