This is the end result for my creature assignment in my ZBrush For Production course. I was given the task of creating a creature based on three dice rolls - one indicated type of animal (bird, mammal, etc.), another indicated environment, and the third indicated time period. I was designated to design a 'Reptile living in a sky environment in the 1600s'. Needless to say, that is a direction that I was more than ready to go down.

The visual result of this idea doesn't really scream 'sky environment' too much, which I am disappointed with, but also accepting of, as I procrastinated far too long on this project. I also have plans to create a base to 'mount' this creature on, as if it is a taxidermied specimen in a gentleman's cabinet of curiosities (which would bring the time period into light more than it is now). So, this design has failed in many aspects, but was a good exercise nonetheless.

I am very pleased with how the scales turned out, and I do not feel that hand-painting in each scale was a waste of time for me, though I know that alphas could have done the job. I wanted to have more control over their appearance than an alpha would provide, though I do understand that I am not very experienced with alphas; I am sure that someone else who is far more experienced could achieve the same results using them.

All in all, I am happy with how this guy ended up, and I hope to offer him as a printable model once I make that base. I'll also have to hollow him out if he's going to be on a standing mount, rather than a wall mount. Any ideas are certainly appreciated! : D Thank you for taking a look at this beastie. : )

Great pose and presence on this one! The hand-painted scales are beautiful. I notice a lot of your models have a low resolution, is there a technicality to that for 3D printing?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'I need a simple one to turn around'. I am very willing to listen if you'd like to elaborate. You can send a Note if you'd like this to be private. Thank you!

o.o I'm a little perplexed by your comment - do you mean that you need the file of my Tuurasucha model to help you recreate your sketch in 3D? I would be very interested in learning more about what your goal is. Thanks for commenting! : )

No. I need someone with the skills who made that model; to work on my sketch, to make it 3D.I need the 3D file.

Oh! So you would like to have a 3D model created from your sketch, is that right? I may be able to do it for a price, depending on how complex your idea is. Thank you for asking!

really?  What price would that be ?

Depending on the complexity of the sketch and what you plan to use the model for, the model may range from $80-$300 US ($300 range is for 3D prints and riggable models - they take much more care to create!). I accept PayPal, and can work with payment schedules if you need it.

If you are interested in seeing what could be done, please feel free to send me a Note with the details of what you would like done, the sketch or other references to go by, and I can give you a more accurate appraisal and quote should I accept what you ask of me.

Thank you for your interest, and have a pleasant day!

This is nice to see! Long time no speak.
I actually get to take my zbrush class in the upcoming fall semester, along with a traditional 3D sculpt class. I'm pretty excited.

Ooh - that's a great combination, to do both kinds of sculpture in the same semester. At least I would think so - sometimes working in the same medium can get overbearing sometimes, and working in another medium helps keep your brain from getting overworked and burnt out. I'd love to hear more about it should you wish to share when the time comes! Input from others' experiences is always worthwhile. : )
Thanks for the comment!

I'll make sure to!

And that's a good idea... I've been stuck in Photoshop for a 13 hour day and a 10 hour day back to back. Which is a lot considering last week I didn't do anything. (doesn't shake a stick at professional, I bet.) Maybe I should watercolor or something tomorrow. Change mediums, go to my studio desk. D:

this is absolutely incredible, except the spikes on the back - 1) less is more and 2) they are too thin and would break off easily, 3) they don't seem to fit the rest of the sculpt stylistically. seeing how rather crocodile-like the model appears, more side by side rows of shorter conical spikes would work better imho.

I appreciate your feedback! I agree on your reasons for your not so great reaction to the spines. It's a good learning experience. Thanks so much! : )

Quick question. How much does the Zbrush program cost? Thinking about getting it for some projects

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LeccathuFurvicael In reply to Scarlet-Harlequin-N [2014-02-08 09:20:43 +0000 UTC]

It's about $700, but makes up for it by not needing any extra purchases for new versions of the program; all updates are free!

Sculptris is ZBrush's smaller sibling, and isn't as powerful, but can still be quite fun and useful to anyone with an interest in digital sculpture. : D

Good luck in your decisions!

It's frustrating as HELL sometimes, but the results are worth it a good portion of the time. Unfortunately, I've just come across a new way to secure armatures, and as such am being wooed by traditional sculpture like crazy! 3D still has its place, though, and oh, what brilliant things are possible!! <3

A trick I learned...use alphas to mask, and then go back in and clean up where they don't do exactly what you want. It gives you control, and speed.

But you're really doing so awesome. Hope you got a decent grade on this one.

Aah, very true - a combination of old school and new techniques makes the most sense!

Thanks so much for your input, and I'm glad you enjoy the work. : )
