This was done with HDR. Three photos of the same shot, 2 full stops under exposed, 2 full stops over exposed and the original. Place all three shots into Photomatix or Photoshop - merge HDR. Have a play. Phoomatix demo is free to try. Once created the HDR image, post edit in Photoshop for the great results. I have recovred so many poor shots in HDR Good Luck.
