I really like how the narrow profile seemed to give the image an almost movie theatre box office poster kind of feel to the whole piece.

Ahah! I actually started this piece as a small sketch to thank my followers after my first daily deviation (that made my account to be haunted by dozens of "ghost" deviants who apparently just joined Deviantart that day and then disappeared... truly, I've never heard of them again). After some time, the small sketch turned out to be a very interesting exercise about lines, so I tried to make it a little more complex.Β
Probably the box office feel is due to the "advertisement-like" nature of the piece.Β

Yeah, the 1-Hit-Wonders annoy the hell outΒ of meΒ also, never did understand why they did that - my art was free to see also. They do help with padding your account stats though, LoL!!
I honestly love that Box office thrill. I have always wanted a genuine "Metropolis" movie banner.

Hm, are these from a graphic novel of yours or something along those lines? In that case, since they're your characters, I hope I don't offend by talking about the designs themselves as well as just how they're drawn here. I think Elio (she's the one in back, right?) could do with a slightly darker cape or lighter pants - I couldn't tell at first that she was standing in front of a gently waving cape; I thought she was just entirely clad in a robe and just had a weird curvy body. Also, is that an... arm protruding down from the Marquis's jacket? The black-and-white contrast is effective, though, if for no other reason than that they'd be harder to differentiate when close up otherwise. Their faces also suggest that their personalities could be diametrically opposed to our ingrained light/dark cultural archetypes...
Anyway, as for this pic itself. Everything's centered well, there's just the right amount of blank space, the shading and lineart are clean, I'm sure you've heard it all before. I personally prefer a clear light source to determine where the shadows are, but the more "in the void" look is perfectly fine. Overall, great designs and great drawing, and now I want to know about these characters, which I guess is about the best measure of success there is.

Well, first of all thank you for your accurate feedback and sorry for the long answer, but, a bit like you, I like to be precise. Also, forgive me if I make grammar mistakes. English is not my native language, but I'll try to do my best!Β
Let's proceed with order:
Yes, they are two characters from my main project that's (sadly) not a graphic novel, because I'm not good at comics D:
So, you've probably seen that I drew them other times, and this piece is only a "stylization" of their more "realistic" design, although I prefer this kind of style in some cases.
(If you want to see my main inspiration for stylized characters, go look at Nico Marlet's art. Among other things, he drew the characters of Kung Fu Panda and How to Train your Dragon)
After a period of almost three years in which I forced myself to draw my characters with realistical proportions, I wanted to return to a more linear style, and this was my main reason to draw them with no background and a very limited palette.
About the misunderstandings on Elio's cape and the Marquis' arm, I'm glad you told me, really! Sometimes happens that, when you draw, you think the subject and its elements are obvious, but it's not. It happened some years ago, with another drawing of mine, that a friend asked me: "Is that a giant muddy slug in the background?" Well, it was only a leaf, and I never could imagine that someone would have seen other things but a leaf. So, as I told before, THIS kind of feedback is really useful. I'll surely try to improve this in my next works.
About light, I was really tempted to use a clear light source at first, but then I abandoned the idea to mantain the painting's lineart, which was the whole point of this exercise. You saw it well.
The last thing that I could say here is that, well... Elio is a man.Β Β I can perfectly see why you thought he was a woman, that's not a problem.
Yes, here in Italy Elio is a boy name, and means "Sun". Please do not think "Oh, I see, He's named "Sun" because he's all dark" because it wasn't made on purpose. (however, the name Elio acquired a very deep meaning for me with the growth of this character). He and the Marquis are actually "business" partners in the story, but yeah, they're pretty different. The Marquis is not the happy-go-lucky light guy, however, and Elio, well, has some complex feelings, like everyone out here. (there's not so much drama, by the way... I'm not a huge lover of overreactions and characters-with-terrible-past-who-became-villains-or-vigilantes eheh).
I'm sorry for the lack of informations about my story and my other characters. I'm trying to feature them here only when I have finished works to show. Otherwise, this profile would be drowning in sketches!Β Β
If you want to chat by note anyway, I'd be glad to hear you!Β
Thanks again and have a wonderful day!Β

Thank you! you hit the spot. This piece has been quite an experiment for me, as I had to work with an extremely limited palette and a more "graphic" lineart. By the way, I really had fun painting this!Β
