Description like everything i've ever drawn ever i liked this allot more half way through than i do now. also like everything i've ever drawn even though i say its done thats really just a way for me to cope with pictures. as most of my drawings show in comments full of "edits" - final doesn't really mean anything to me. if you have an insightful enough comment i'll try to adapt to it.

that said im not going to redraw it or anything X_X!

an evolution of this forlorn piece [link] this is defiantly a mech frame i am going to keep returning too as i think it holds much promise. essentially its upper torso has no front and can swivel in any way to allow rocket pods and other hull mounted weapons to fire at a target. all the while 4 independent miniguns seek out infantry and light vehicle threats while the main gun gets into position and fires.

i was playing around with a lot of ideas for this, but i think it's ok as it is. no need to get it more complicated. from incoming missiles slamming into some rocks offscreen, to a small group of aliens hiding behind the rock getting ready to attack it to a burning apc instead of the rock in the foreground. this is what i ended up with.

This looks like a 20 mm or higher caliber I hope not a 88 mm? Over kill if anti personnel! Anti armor yes!

The world needs more mechs that aren't strictly humanoid. This is a great example of how practicality outpaces familiarity. In fact, the whole lack of anything to relate to makes this all the more alien -- and all the more unnerving. I'd definitely love to see this in action... at least, not against me. ;D

i agree! lots of janky perspective... but i'll run with the core idea in the future!

This is awesome. the poise is great, like it can traverse the terrain and still lock on a target. It's good. I'd love to see you put it into battle.

I like this design and the composition, it has a lot of movement and energy. I also like it because it has a unique silhouette, and feels "organic", verses "Iconic" like a Gundam for instance.

Great work.

the design is actually a refined version of an early concept which can be found here:

I'm sensing a little 'Ghost in The Shell' influence. Which is NEVER bad.

In fact, if this is as computer controlled as the tachikomas, it's need more of those camera pod clusters[tri-pod eye-thingies].

I can see this on a wall. Or on a TV show. Or in a Sci-fi movie, it's damn righteous. Standing atop that outcropping like a victorious Spartan.

The joint design you chose is insanely original! Reduces operational weight, and makes me horny.

Only critiques:
1) Hot gas rises. Can make the smoke drift up?

2) The feet did not kick up any dust?

3) The "Tyrannosaur arms", any way to make them more snug with the upright position. They have a squared recess, but are rounded... This thing has to run at some point, and if they folded/tucked in, it'd be epic.

4)No caution stickers? or do support bots do maintenance on those pull sections?
Speaking of them, does this thing parachute in? That femur pull makes me think badass stuff like that.

5)When I pull back it looks like a MkII of a design. The boxy edges scream utilitarian, and need some extra edges or rounding to indicate an engineer's sinister lust for his Deathmachine. that should make it look like a MkIII edition.

tl;dr Epic mech, dude. Nitpicking perfection really.

thanks for the elaborate comment! i do love GitS!

1) hot gas will drift up, but wind will always prevail.

2) i didn't really place him here in the middle of movement, i kinda saw it more as up on a butte having just popped up to take a shot.

3) they weren't fully realized unfortunately - i was going to give them an ability to fold up like the legs, but didn't and ended up with something halfway in between but better then neither.

4) hehe, kept it really really plane - didn't have time to render him properly or give him much surface detail.

5) this is a design i would like to revisit and take further for sure!

thank you for the awesome crit and comments!

Neat design, looks functional It seems those legs can fold up for transport and those little appendages with gattling guns for close range defense measures. An overall balanced design and has a modern day feel to the design, very cool

This is a great piece. I can easily see this on a geeks wall. So im saying a poster of this would be brilliant.

What was your influence on this mech. And tell me some statistics too lol.

Great job

Legato895 In reply to YouCannotFalter [2008-09-08 02:09:16 +0000 UTC]

sorry for how long this sat unanswered /o\

first off, im glad you enjoy it - i can't remember the print sizes available i know how you feel. i tend to put up lots of art on my walls

i guess my influences are just trying to break the mold of what a mech is as much as i can. and the easiest way to do that is to throw off the viewer by dropping a humanoid form and making it fairly un-symmetrical.
once i decided to do those two things i than had to decide what advantages that would give the mech. to me having no front would give the mech a truly 360 degree ring of usefulness and than it was just another jump to turn that into a point defense system consisting of 4 guns that all protect the main cannon as it gets into position and fires.

tech involved could range from organic muscles (although before covering the major joints in cloth had drawn out the pneumatics) to memory metals. that doesn't concern me too much. each gun arm is 100% independently run by their own computer but share information to the entire system. also while i took it out the long box on the side facing you above the ammo drums was going to be a recon bot launcher. so this thing would move from cover to cover, each gun scanning for targets while 6-8 drones would fly around and create a blanket of observation.

another change prompted by a friend was the box up front. originally it was going to be a missile pod where the missiles fired off to the side (the exhaust facing the viewer) however that was deemed confusing so i turned them facing forward at the last minute.

the cannon could either shoot standard munitions or rocket assisted munitions and could either function as a tank gun or as an artillery piece. the linked deviation showing the original version of this mech i played around with a few years ago shows a more artillery themed gun however

other than the ability to shoot down incoming missiles and basic armor, most of the survivability comes from being too maneuverable and aware to be pinned down by large anti mech vehicles while being able to take care of smaller threats from all directions.

hope this is satisfactory!

Nice mecha concept, and the idea is sound. It gives the piece a contemporary feeling, like on the way to developing the humanoid mechas (which I personally love so much but I'm beginning to like these as well).

One thing though, from your description, it would either have to have a large crew, which I don't think there is enough room for, or a very sophisticated computer network to operate all the different weapons and threat ID systems. If the latter, I hope to God it doesn't catch a virus!

Legato895 In reply to frazamm [2008-09-02 20:07:11 +0000 UTC]

hehe, personally when it comes to humanoid mechs theres nothing wrong with them, i just don't really feel like drawing them much. to me a mech can do a lot more specialized work when it doesn't conform to any sort of preconceived form. it also gives the artist a lot more flexibility when coming up with stuff that hasn't been done before.

and yeah the whole thing is computer controlled and all of the risks that pose should balance out with the rewards. if anything there could be one pilot but that wasn't intended

Therefore it's either AI driven or remotely operated. Anyway, as I said, nice concept.
