Leaving Earth-6 for a bit, we jump over to the primary universe, Earth-1. This is the return of one of my oldest and most powerful characters...Marcus Tanner, The Hellbrand.

Marcus’s story begins 24 years ago in Manitoba, Canada with Jacob and Patricia Tanner, practitioners of certain dark arts. The two of them put together a spell that was intended to bring a powerful entity to earth, the Antichrist. Within this ritual they would conceive a child that was meant to serve as the vessel for this entity. Unbeknownst to the two of them however, they were reaching out to forces far beyond anything they could have imagined. The embryo had not been bonded to the Antichrist, but rather something far older...A primordial consciousness, the very embodiment of combustion itself..the Fire Elemental. What they failed to realize however was that one Elemental cannot exist in a physical space by itself, lest its power disturb the natural order. To maintain balance, the cosmos granted Patricia a second embryo which would house the Water Elemental, the counterpart to fire. This resulted in the birth of twins, Marcus and Victoria. Unfortunately, the strain of birthing two godly beings proved too much for Patricia’s body and she would parish during childbirth. Now their was only Jacob left to look after and raise the twins alone.

Jumping forward about 10 years, we find Marcus and Victoria trying to remain close and out of the way of their now violent alcoholic father. Things had grown dark for the Tanners, but the strife had only just begun. One particular day, on their fathers birthday, the kids decided to surprise their father by cleaning the house and making him supper. When Jacob arrived, the house was spotless and everything seemed perfect..but they were far from it. Jacob was exceedingly drunk and began to freak out when he saw what the kids had done. In trying to do a good thing for their father, the kids had accidentally moved and discarded items that had belonged to their mother, which hadn’t moved since her death 10 years prior. This causes Jacob to snap and begin beating on Marcus, who he blames for Patricia’s death. Sensing Marcus was in danger, something deep within him began to awaken, erupting from within Marcus in the form of a massive explosion that leveled the entire house.

Nearby, a neighboring family from the Cree Tribe, the Lightfoot family spotted the fireball and quickly leapt to action. Arriving on the scene was Vernon Lightfoot and his son James...before them, the burning remains of a house and a lone child on the ground. Unable to find any sign of his sister or father, Vernon Lightfoot decided to take Marcus in. Marcus would continue to stay with the Lightfoot family, eventually growing closer to James and his sister Sparrow. They bonded over a shared appreciation for the book Moby Dick, leading to James taking on the nickname “Starbuck” and Marcus taking on the nickname “Ahab”

Things still wouldn’t be great for Marcus. In spite of finding a family of sorts, Marcus began to notice that the other townspeople looked at him with a wary eye. His parents had a nasty reputation as “devil worshipers”, and many believed Marcus to be some kind of hellspawn, especially given the large birthmark on his chest, the symbol of the Fire Elemental. Marcus was tormented for this, eventually being given the derogatory name “Hellbrand” by his tormentors.

Marcus is now in a very difficult place. Everyone in his town, even his adopted family seem to fear him. Even Marcus is afraid of himself, not knowing who or what he is, or even remotely what he’s capable of. All he has is his heart and an itch in the back of his head insisting that somewhere out there, his sister is still alive. He can’t explain it, he doesn’t completely understand it but he is often met with dreams or flash visions of a woman veiled in white, surrounded by a raging sea...something within him knowing that its Victoria. Soon, Marcus is going to meet people in a similar situation as him, a family that will stand with him through his search and through events Marcus couldn’t even dream of.
