Description 6 months ago, I posted an open letter to deviantArt. ( An open letter to deviantArtHey, deviantArt staff? Can we talk for a minute?
What are you doing? Like what do you think you're accomplishing if you're not only implementing a new "layout change" that has a ton of technical issues but also inevitably making it the permanent website design for all users? I get that people don't like change, but holy actual shit this "eclipse" layout is a dumpster fire and there's nothing that can make it good. If you guys didn't have the option to use the "classic" layout as of right now, this platform's daily user activity would be at an all time low.
Not one time, in the history of the internet, has a major social media website (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter etc) ever reverted it's layout or UI back to a previous incarnation because of "user base backlash". You know why that is?
They don't care about what their users think or say. It doesn't matter how many people bitch and moan about it, doesn't matter how many people submit feedback forms that specifically ask them to chang seen here) It explained how the Eclipse layout hurts the user base. There were 2 options for the the staff to make in order to not dig their own graves. They were;

1. Cancel all plans for the Eclipse website layout.
2. Always allow users to switch to the classic site view as an option if Eclipse becomes more "well liked".

They refused both choices, as It simply isn’t feasible for us to keep Classic DeviantArt running forever now that Eclipse has been officially released.
This is a complete lie, and a sad one at that. What they can do is have a separate team who know how to manage the classic layout and fix whatever truly breaks.

The management team's claim as to why deviantArt needs to "change" is to attract new users in hopes that "the website won't die". Accounts created less than a year ago are unable to switch their layout to "classic", this is nothing more than artificially inflating the amount of Eclipse users who don't have the choice to use classic if they want. As time will go on, the percentage of users using the eclipse layout will surpass the amount of users who use classic because of this. This is Wix' strategy to kill off the classic view, because they know damn well that people don't want to use eclipse.

Eclipse's defenders use the "deviantArt needed the eclipse because it was dying" statement as their standpoint, usually trying to guilt trip people. They also like to write long speeches in their replies to make themselves look professional or to protagonize themselves. They show no empathy when replying to people who don't want the classic layout to be removed, because their evolution-blindness causes them to only look forward at the future. Liking the eclipse layout is fine, but to say that the classic layout needs to die/retire is bigotry at it's core.

Giving feedback on eclipse does nothing to help. If our goal is to keep classic layout as an option for how the site looks, we should be telling them that we don't want Eclipse period. The staff don't understand that no matter how much they ""improve"" the eclipse, it will never be the same as the classic. Do they think we're such fools into believing that they can "fix" something that will never satisfy us?

If the deviantArt team truly cared about their users, they would not be discontinuing the use of classic layout.
Instead, they would be fixing the actual problems with this website, such as not being able to report art thieves who steal art from inactive accounts. Not being able to report stolen art that isn't yours is like calling the police but have them not do anything because it's not you that's the victim.
What has also recently been removed is the 1-month core subscription purchase. Yeah, because everyone has enough money to purchase a full year of core.
Skype has had an all time low in the amount of users and usage because of the fact in 2017, the developers killed off support for the "classic" version of the application.
The new layout and UI of Skype removes a lot of features such as file sharing, something that online chat services must have in order to be successful.
This change was the reason why Discord, a "gamer" oriented chat service rapidly rose to popularity among internet users, even to some non-gamers alike.

Ever since I started this fight, I put a link in my user signature that can revert the layout back to classic view. Turns out, no one on Eclipse can see signatures, making it a complete waste. I don't know if this was intentional or not, but it's one of the reasons why we cannot let this layout die. BBCode is also something they're planning on retiring with Eclipse, it's going to break a lot of comments and journals made with them. Don't they know what they're doing?

If deviantArt retires classic layout for all users, the site will suffer the same demise as Skype did. And, with enough people leaving, will eventually be shut down due to lack of users supporting the site because of their inhumane changes they made that were supposed to help the site stay alive.

And that is why on May 20th; 2020, we will cease all uploads to protest this cruel change.

Websites changing their layouts without user base consent has run rampant throughout the internet's history, and it's about time we put an end to that!

Listen to our words, deviantArt team.

Do
Not
Discontinue
The
Classic
Layout

If you do not commend our wishes
We will declare WAR.

We will BOYCOTT this website as long as Eclipse is the permanent layout choice, we've tried to make our words be heard, and now we mean it.
We cannot lose this fight, we must continue petitioning and protesting this change until we get classic view set in stone.

You probably didn't even read anything from it, or anything else I've wrote about it.

If you read through it, you'd know the answer to your little question.

I honestly hate the "new" layout, the older one is way better. If deviantart is not careful they might just end up going the way of Tumblr after their adult content ban. What is it going to take to get these idiotic companies to fucking listen to their damn communities??? I don't understand what is so Godawful about the classic view? It just doesn't sit right with me that they are literally forcing this stupid looking layout on us when the classic view has been around for so long. Eclipse view looks so bland compared to the classic view, I feel like the classic view is what made Deviantart, well, Deviantart. That would be like YouTube (or some equivalent) suddenly forcing people to adopt a brand new and lackluster appearance (you know more than they already have considering the way that channel pages used to look versus now). All in all, I am 100% AGAINST this stupid fucking change!!!!

Let's move to Twitter, Discord or somewhere else until they become as shaky. We already lost MySpace and Tumblr.
Either ways protesting will not change their minds. All thing good MUST come to an end at some point and it's messed up as it is inevitable. Sorry for sounding negative, however, I am not fund of the upcoming change (that will kill a website before its 20th birthday) either.

Honestly, the DA staff/mods are probably getting salty because they spent all their time trying to make it look ''nice'', while it is starting to look like any other popular website. With a dark mode and a light mode.
I like the way DeviantArt (old) looks. It's original. It's good. Eclipse looks like a ripped off version of Instagram and Youtube mixed together with that one button that makes the site green. Wow very fucking original.

DeviantArt claims that it will attract more people, but honestly, I think the only thing that will happen is people will leave. About a quarter of all people I know say they are going to deactivate their account if this shit goes through.

Don't get me wrong please. I'm as furious as you are. I DISPISE Eclipse.Β

all the core members and pages that spent so long on coding as well, did they not think about what would happen to users who's pages are well decorated? what will happen to badges and llamas too, and other nice little miscellaneous bits and pieces that are really nice to have around.
Stuff like shout-boxes and Commission boxes?
Yikes DA, you've really done it this time.Β

I really don't want the site to die but you really illustrated how that might happen thanks to Eclipse. I shared your journal, some others, and made a journal of my own to spread awareness:

Everyone Speak!Earlier today, I was forced to use Eclipse. I panicked, thinking I'd accidentally toggled into it. I wanted to toggle right out but the option was gone. This is it, I thought. Now DeviantArt is finally making Eclipse mandatory. Maybe it won't be so bad. Maybe I just have to get used to it.
It was terrible.
With each growing minute I felt myself growing increasingly antagonistic to the new site layout. Why was it so difficult to do things that had been so simple before? Why was it so slow? There's so much empty space everywhere yet it's hard to find anything. Buttons don't even say what they do when you hover your cursor over them, you have to just click them and hope nothing bad happens. Is this the future?
Then, a mixed blessing.
DeviantArt released their update saying we can still toggle to the old site. Hallelujah! I'd tried Account Settings earlier but the option wasn't there - that would be too obvious. It's been a few hours and maybe I'm suppressing the memory due to how unpleasa

Before I saw journals like these I thought we were in the minority but I'm starting to think at least over half of us are not happy about the direction DeviantArt is heading.

BBcode's also really easy to use, just because something's old doesn't mean you have to throw it away. There's a difference between 2 year out of date soup and a tv you bought back in 1999.

Guess, "Don't fix what's not broken" doesn't apply for DeviantArt. This is more "What's already good, let's make it worse"

[dA update] Eclipse To Be FORCED ON EVERYONEAs per their newest announcement, Eclipse is about to be forced onto everyone.Β
"Around May 20th, all deviants will gain access to the new version of DeviantArt! The old version of the site will be retired."
Not that the deviantART Staff was not already rank and filed with narcisistic degenerates, but the company that owns deviantART, Wix -- has a very long list of negative customer feedback.
Call me a conspiracy nut if you want to, but Wix hates deviantART and is intending to destroy it. That is what haters with millions of dollars do. They ruin absolutely everything they can. This is partly due to all of this "woke culture". Post-modern trash.Β
I hope this inspires some third party developers to maybe create a deviantART clone that is based on Fully Decentralized Technology, so that t
