funny how cinema's pretty much first attempt at a vampire , got it so right first time
He's nothing like the books description and i can't see him mixing in with victorian society
but he does look like a "real" vampire
the actor looked more or less he same in real life

That's very true, the finished look came out really great.
And it's a design that Hollywood hasn't tried much to duplicate either, which is a shame as it came across as very terrifying, even in black and white!

You do get some attempts at recreating him
Fright nights vampire was meant to be a tribute at the end and more obviously Salom's lot
But they tend to overdo the make -up
The original is very subtle
It seems like they used vampire bats as a guide , with his ears and sharp teeth at the front , rather than the usual canine fangs
he's also unusual ,in he way he spends all night draining the victim , like a real parasite/leech
usually it's all over in seconds!

The teeth to me also come across as very rat like in some way. Like he has attributes of both
He's quite a bit more monstrous than other varieties of vampires used in media, not the sleek and seductive version one expects, nor the refined and cultured. It some respects he's like a monster that learned to dress itself and attempted to ape human behavior.
