I looked for it in the wiki and you are right It is European Rhinoceros beetle in larval stage
I did find it in a rotten tree trunk Thank you for pointing that out, I'm not so familiar with bugs, I recognize them but I don't know their names

As a matter a fact, I saw couple of the grown beetles this summer, strolling around the house

I think you found it there because they feed on rotting wood and compost in that stage, and what better place than a rotten tree trunk , maybe this one is baby of the grown beetles you saw
