Just in case you're curious, the devs already said that DS2 will be scarier than the first one.

And yes, Isaac's gone certifiably nuts. He's rotting in a mental asylum speaking gibberish and drawing unitology symbols. The DS2 viral marketing started a day or two ago.

Wicked drawing. Gonna be doing some DS2 ones?

Kick ass... that's sort of how I thought they were gonna go, but logically, they couldn't really have gone in a much different direction with Isaac. Naturally after something like the Ishimura, that sounds like pretty much what would happen. I'm really interested in learning more about the Marker Fragments (just a shard??) - gee, I'm almost intriuged to see how DS2 will parallel the fanfic I've been writing, because I took a direction that might be construed very similar (although so far from what I've seen, the details on DS2 story are really REALLY scanty, so it's difficult to compare). It would be pretty cool if I happened to be on track with them, at leat to some degree - because then I wouldn't feel like the past year I spent writing it was a waste! O_O

And yes, I'm pretty sure I'll be drawing some DS2 stuff, too. Of course, it'll have to wait until after I;ve finished locking myself up in my house for a week straight after I get the game!

On another side note (sorry, I accidentally hit the send button too early)...

"Isaac... We're all gonna burn for what we did to you."

Ok - now I'm intrigued. Who's going to burn? The Church? The necromorphs? Or just humans in general? This brings me back to Extraction, and something in particular that was in Chapter 1 of that game but they haven't really elaborated on yet. At the end of Chapter One, before the character you're playing dies (I can't remember his name), he sees some necromorphs closing in on him, then a flash, and a moment later, they have turned human. This makes me wonder if it's one of those paradox things where infected people see uninfected people as necromorphs in an illusion, as the "enemy".. if this is the case, then maybe DS2 will be a subliminal story tucked underneath the main one. Maybe Isaac will be seeing uninfected humans as necromorphs, so in a "heroic attempt to clear the Sprawl", he's killing the necromorphs. However, turns out that he's not actually being heroic, he's just gone f*ing crazy, going around and killing everyone on a murderous, vengeful rampage for what they did with the Marker, causing what happened the Aegis7, the Ishimura, and Nicole's ill-fated death. Because he's infected, he's seeing necromorphs, and feels justified in what he's doing, but in reality, he IS a necromorph, and he's killing everyone.

This makes me think if it's possible that in the DS universe, all of the humans are already "infected". After all, if the Black Marker has any powers similar to the Red Marker, then that means that chances are all of the human race on Earth was already infected from who knows when... so humans are necromorph "descendants", and now it's just starting all over on Aegis7.

Hmm. Ok, now I think I have official put too much thought into this.

That's... beyond insane

I hope they don't go down that path where it turns out that he's been slaughtering innocent people the whole time. A twist like that would wreck the narrative for me. I didn't play Extraction unfortunately

However if they show him tripping out and hallucinating, that would be cool.

But from what you said, maybe Isaac is different from the deranged miner. He's very unique. Also, according to an interview, he actually does interact with multiple other survivors including "Lexine" (she was in Extraction?) so I don't think he would hallucinate massacring everyone.

As for the burning... personally, I think it's the Church/Government. According to the official DS website, the destruction of the Ishimura has been painted as a terrorist attack... so that points to a government cover up, right?

I hope they don't go down the road of making Isaac a Necromorph because, well... if you played Resistance 2, you'd know why.

Also, I'm wondering if the art director is using misdirection. If that isn't Isaac speaking in the trailer, then who? The trailer makes sense if Isaac's speaking, it works in that context. It's less... powerful... if it's just some random guy who we didn't spend 10 hours running around in the horror of the Ishimura.

Oh, onemore thing to note - one of the things I noticed written on that letter from the doctor was the term "alpha wave attenuaton" - which, I looked up and found apparently refers to something along the lines of mutating a strand of a virus or bacteria to make it less potent. At first I thought that this might mean that they found a way to tame the virus (maybe some of Mercer's work) and they did that in Isaac when he came back to Sprawl, which might explain how he turns out in DS2. But realizing that "alpha wave attenuation" was something the doctors noted Isaac repeating, means it must have come from the Marker, or something like that. I am wondering if he is talking about Lexine, then. It might explain her immunity. Oh, shit... this thing is going to be so convoluted in my head by the time the game gets out. It's a whole year! Geez.

leksbronks In reply to Arashdeep [2010-04-30 06:18:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I agree, I hope they don't turn him into a 'bad guy'. Although, playing with the idea of Isaac being a necromorph is sort of inevitable. He's infected apparently, or so that's what I'm getting out of it... maybe it IS sort of like Resistance (which I have't played yet... I acquired a copy of R1 not too long ago, haven't played it yet, so I only know the very outside story of a virus took over, the Nathan character is a hybrid, etc. etc. but not any of the details). Maybe they'll make it like one of those moral dilemmas, where he's got to fight between maintaining humanity and becoming something else, you know, cookie cutter movie stuff, :/ But becuase I probably wont ever get around to playing it, can you tell me what happens in R2 that would make me understand?

As far as Lexine goes, she was a Colonist who escapes in Extraction. Though they didn't go too much into it (and I hope they do in DS2), she is inexplicably 'immune' to the virus. One of the guys in the group she is traveleing with (Eckhart) is a Unitologist who wants to bring her back to Earth for study, because he knows about her condition, but he's undercover, etc. etc. It's never explained, all sort of vague like Dead Space was. I think they're writing this stuff as they're going along in a lot of ways, because I get the sense that maybe even they don't know which direction they're going to asbolutely head. I don't know. Or maybe they're real masters at this and know exactly what they want, and they're saving all of the intricate details to unfold altogether in DS2, or something. Leaking it out to torture the fans. I don't know.

As for misdirection, yeah - maybe they are! Maybe that's their style... or maybe they're gonna punish everyone for whover leaked that video early (if it wasn't them to drive publicity, of course )

BTW - I wantd to say thanks for stopping by and being so kind as to leave me all this info on the development! I really appreciate it. I love the DS franchise, but I don't really do a whole lot of news hunting, so Ive missed out on a lot of stuff. I actually missed that damn contest they had, to design a move... I would have TOTALLY friggin' entered that thing, but I MISSED THE DATE! I first saw it on their website and was like, "Oh HELL yeah" but then when I looked at the official rules I realized I was a week after the last day for submissions. DAMMIT

But at any rate, thank you.

Not a problem. I love talking to people about Dead Space, most of my buddies here aren't really into it like me.

As for Resistance 2, here's a quick summary (it's been quite a while since I played, so this is pretty bare bones)

The main character, Nathan Hale, gets infected by the virus that mutates people into the chimera, but he uses an injection to stave off the infection. But something happens, and the infection grows too fast, and he has a few hours left before the virus takes over. He goes, beats the villain, but the planet is like transferred to another dimension or sector of space or something (it got really weird at the end), and then his mind is fully taken over by the virus, and then his teammate shoots him in the face. The end. Terrible ending.

The character was interesting, but it was such an ignoble way to deal with a character whose importance was established fairly early on. And the ending is very weird and abrupt. There's no closure, it just ends on a cliffhanger. It's frustrating.

I really wanted to play Extraction, but I have no Wii... though there is some talk about porting Extraction over to PSN or XBL, the dev team is looking into it, so fingers crossed. I've even heard rumours that it might be given away as a pre-order bonus for ordering Dead Space 2, but that's just a rumour, so I'm not 100% on that.

I am fairly certain that Lexine makes an appearance in DS2, though I don't know the circumstances.

I don't know if you have Facebook or not, but if you do, you could join the DS fan page. All the latest info about trailers and contests and stuff will be posted their first, so you'll never fall behind. Also, the DS website's been rehauled, new awesome wallpapers, an audio log about the people who picked Isaac up, and if you watch the trailer, a box will pop up where you can enter your e-mail, and you get mailed this awesome image to decode, and a link to a "patient's note". Very eerie stuff.

Oh, and there'll be something special coming on June 14th... the symbols in the trailer told me so

Yeah, I am a bit of a gaming enthusiast myself. I have been so since I was a little kid, when I got my first copy of Metroid on the NES. It changed my life; from there, I went on to a whole lotta other game series that I fell in love with, and I've carried that love up to this day. I don't play and master every game that's out there like some hardcore folks, but when I do find a series I like, I tend to take it to heart. The last series that struck me that way (and still does) is Half life, which was my alltime favorite game for a long time. i can't tell you how many times I played and replayed HL2. I'm sad that Valve seems to have neglected finishing it... I still haven't heard any word on episode 3, which was supposed to happen at some point... but I can't find anything about it. I haven't looked recently, I gave up a while ago so maybe I missed it if they did release it, but I dunno. Maybe they just got too involved with L4D, which I also like, but not necessarily endeared to it like HL, or Dead Space. DS seems to haev more promise at least in the sense that the developers seem to be really interested in developing the series. Valve always seemed kinda nonchalant about it.

Yes, I heard abut the potential Extraction port, though I wonder if they will keep it as a rail game. Extraction was rail based, where the movement was restricted to automatic computer movement and you had to do all of your fighting and actions within windows of time. I haven't played very many games like that, so it was interesting, but it really worked well in the context of the Wii because you could use the swinging motions of the remote, which made playing the game natural. Trying to play the same type of game on a PS3 or 460 handheld will be very awkward. I wonder if they are going to change it at all? If they do port it I will probably get a copy anyway, and see what it is like. However, I don't think it would be as fun an experience as it is on the Wii, especially using the handheld gun remote holder that makes it really feel like you are holding a plasma cutter rather than a remote.

Well, the Playstation Move motion controller and Natal for xBox are coming out in the fall, I think with those products, Extraction would transfer over very well.

You know what would be awesome? If Isaac and Gordon met in a bar and just started drinking and bitching about their lives. That'd be hilarious.

Yes yes, Isaac is the sex bomb. I only hope they don't destroy him with DS2. The one thing that made him cool in DS1 was the fact he was just a normal guy in an extraordinary situation, but now he's coming back with "more experience", and they're probably going to totally front him as some gung-ho wannabe soldier now. I hope not (I hope he's certifiably insane from the Marker's influence, at the very least).

I shouldn't be so hard, it will probably kick ass and I'm just being a bitchy whiner, but you never know what game developers are thinking...

But all in all, yes... Isaac in any position, vertical or horizontal, is good enough for me

I'm concerned for the exact same reasons over Dead Space 2! I really don't want Isaac to become just another badass for the sake of being a badass. He's an engineer, and that's how it should stay! I don't want multiplayer that involves shooting random people online either - that wouldn't make any sense story wise! I've read that Isaac is gonna be facing Necromorph halucinations - he's gonna still be going a bit crazy and seeing stuff. I kinda like the idea of shooting at necros simply appearing in front ofyou and me freaking out - kinda like the crazy scientists you see in Vault 106 ( I think it's that one ) in Fallout 3. Creeeeepy! I do like his new suit design. I'm hoping the original design will still be available somehow, even if it has to be unlocked...

leksbronks In reply to PhaseChan [2010-04-26 22:40:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think one of the best things about Extraction was the suggestion of hallucinations... i.e., end of chapter one where the character you're playing dies (I can't remember his name), but just before he dies, he sees some necromorphs approaching him.. But then they sudddenly turn into humans, as if the necromorphs were themselves the illusion. This makes me wonder about the whole "they are what you see" idea, where maybe humans who are infected or "influenced" by the Marker see necromorphs instead of people... like maybe the humans think they are humans, and are seeing necromorphs - but the actuality, they are the necromorphs and the necromorphs they are seeing are really humans, and vice versa... so maybe Isaac returns to the Sprawl, and he's already a necromorph... but because he's infected, he still sees humans.. but he sees them as necromorphs, paradox-like.

Like maybe the Ishimura, the COlony the Sprawl and all ofthese places are already infected by the ecromprh virus, but because they're already infected, they don't know it, and they're still working and living like they were human. Those who "see them as humans" are infected, and they wouldn't know. This idea might actually work, because if everyone was infected, how would anyone know what was happening, right? Imagine if behind the entire story, we're thinking, "the humans must stop the virus before its too late", but what if it was already too late? What if people had already returned to Sprawl and infected that place, too? Or what if Isaac is the one eho does it?

So many possibilities! I'm wondering what Visceral's intention is.

What if the human race is already a 'breed of necromorph' from the Black Marker? What if Altman started the initial human infection, so that his descendants (and the descendants of any infected, really) became the human race we know of today? What if being infected by the Red Marker is nothing more than say, being re-empowered?
