Description So I've been tackling the Hard Core mode in Dead Space 2 lately, which only provides three total save points throughout the entire game, and no in-game checkpoints. That means you basically have to spread out three measly save points throughout 15 chapters, and you have to marathon it between each one to finish it in this mode.

Anyway, I'm not that great of a game player, so its definitely challenging for me and I die a lot - and every time I die, I have to start over at my last save point, which for me is usually about 5-6 chapters back. I always end up dying doing something stupid, like accidentally walking into one of those little exploding pods out of the blue, forgetting to recharge my oxygen in time, walking into the drill's blades, stuff like that.

So, because of this flaw in my gaming ability, this means that I have had to replay large portions of the game over and over... and have had to sit through several of the game's lengthy interactive cinematics, over and over. One of these that will be indelibly marked in my memory is this lovely scene, where Isaac is battling against his beloved dead psycho host beast girlfriend who is intent on stabbing him in the eye with a hypodermic needle.

Good scene. Pretty **cking tired of seeing it at this point, but still, good scene.

If you got a strong Contact Beam, use it for the last boss. It will finish the fight in 4 shots. Tested it myself ^^

Oh yes same here, the Contact beam helped me beat DS2. I remember I really hated it in DS1 because it was so hard to use, but after I practiced with it for some time, it quickly became a favorite weapon. I struggled with DS2 ending a few times trying to use the plasma cutter, but then I used the CB and was like, WTF I should have used that one in the first place!

That one and the detonators also made it into my inventory (though dets are useless at the end boss), ....

The weapons I always keep on me are the Pulse Rifle Plasma Cutter and Force Gun (My favourite ^^). I always swap around the fourth weapon. I'm currently using the Line Gun to get a couple trophies. Next will be the Javelin Gun.

Oh yeah, every DS game the first thing I do is mega-maximize the plasma cutter. It always turns out to be the most effective weapon I have, save for the giant foam hand where Isaac says "Bang". I love that thing... I wish I could use it in Hard Core mode.

I got the Forged Plasma Cutter from a DLC, which is stronger and the damage is greater because of the Elite Advanced Suit. And I get what you mean about the Plasma Cutter. You could probably do the whole game with just it. And I want the Hand Cannon as well XD And Devil's Horns for 3.

Actually, I thought that in one of the games there is a trophy for playing the entire game equipped only with the plasma cutter (no other weapons in your inventory). I don't remember which one that was, but I know I've done that!

Hardcore? Maybe I should try that out someday so that I can swear a lot when I die to those necromorphs coming behind my back. Zealot difficulty was much harder than DS1 Impossible mode that was just annoying because necromorphs ate way too much plasma cutters ammo.

I hate Stross. I stomp on his corpse every time I finish stabbing him in the head with that damned screw driver. I haven't done hardcore yet, but I flew through the second hardest setting easily... the name of which setting escapes me at the moment. I love how your thoughts and interpretations of these scenes just come out on paper. Your impressions of Isaac's face are always fun to look at!

THANKS

I've got mixed feelings about Stross. It sucks cause he flipped out and became an enemy of sorts, but in a way I also feel sorry for him because you know what's happening to him is beyond his control. His actions really play on his weakness, and I often found myself wondering why, if Isaac was infected like Stross was, why je didn't react in a similar way. I know Isaac is supposed to be a bad ass and all, but I kinda wish they would have made him a little less stable - more suicide scenes, and some more wild, paranoid behavior. Isaac was a little too "together" to be an infected, I think. In reality, he probably would have eventually flipped out just like Stross did. And Ellie too, for that matter.

Tolubnae In reply to leksbronks [2011-06-23 20:44:06 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. I see what you mean. Overall, Dead Space 2 was much easier than the original... I'm not sure if it's the mapping and the fact that the enemies' positions and hidey places were never randomized (as in Left 4 Dead) or if it was Isaac's new abilities. I do agree that Isaac was a bit too stable. The fact that Nicole could attack him and shake the gameplay up was pretty cool, but it should have come around more often, and it could have been much more interactive. But as for Ellie and Isaac flipping out, I could see a Dead Space 3 rolling around sometime soon, especially because it vaguely hinted at a cliffhanger ending. It kind of left some wiggle room for Isaac to attack Ellie because he felt like he was being watched as he was in the end cinematic of the first game.

Yeah, not to mention that they still have to bring everything to a head with Lexine, too. I am assuming that Isaac and Lexine will eventually cross paths, what with Isaac being a Maker and Lexine being an Immune. I don't know how that is all going to come together, but it has built up too much not to mean something. The anticipation is killing me.

I keep wondering if Lexine will eventually become Isaac's nemesis - the more infected by the Marker he becomes (and it seems like destroying the Markers is impossible if he [and others] can just keep rebuilding them), the more this seems to conflict with Lexine's ability to repel the virus. Maybe Isaac will become the next Hive Mind who is so powerful that he can only be stopped by a 4 foot-tall British accented punk looking girl.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leksbronks In reply to Space-in-Time [2011-06-21 22:12:00 +0000 UTC]

Plan? Plan? What plan?? Actually, I kinda got myself in a bind because I made my first save point wayyyy too early... so I had to make a really long stretch to Chapter 7 to make my second save, and now I am trying to marathon it from Chapter 7 to at least one or two save points back from the final Marker battle at the end. It's been hard and it really sucks, because the large gap between my second and what will eventually be my third save point includes the Solar Array and the Ishimura portions, both of which take for-EVER... *sigh*

So the best plan would be to go as FAR AS YOU CAN BEFORE YOU SAVE!!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Space-in-Time In reply to leksbronks [2011-06-22 13:59:11 +0000 UTC]

I tell you, if you manage to get to the save point just before the drill ride, you'll make it. I had my second save there, and my final save before the eye poke machine.

This because these parts of the game are so random, I mean one day I might get all the needles in correcly, another day I screw up 5 times in a row!

But i suppose saving after the ishimura runthrough is allright, it's not very long to the drill!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leksbronks In reply to Space-in-Time [2011-06-23 18:50:46 +0000 UTC]

In actuality, I should really start over because I put my first save not too long after chapter 3. I should start over just to get that one to where I have my second save point, and then use the last two to muscle through Chapters 8-15. However, I spent WAY too much time in the Church of Unitology the first time to want to see it again for a while, so I think I'm just gonna try for the impossible and memorize the friggin game from Chapter 8 on by playing it a million times over - and then hopefully, I can finish this damn thing.

Space-in-Time In reply to leksbronks [2011-06-23 21:15:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I think planning is most important! You need to know where you can find ammo and medpacks, as well as where the monsters come from.

One strategy that really helped me was slowness... I took it extremely slow... everywhere but in the most dire situations. Most of the necros are triggered when you pass a certain point on the floor. So if you take one step at a time, and you'll get one necro at a time (just remember that sometimes they come from behind)!

Sometimes I even backtracked so that if I had to run away, I wouldn't get necros in my face.

I know how you feel about the church... I was quite confident about the last boss, but I kept running into Nicole as she teleported herself... and when she grabbed me it was over, again and again.... I had to change my tactics completely to overcome her. And then I FAILED at the last flying sequence. And then I failed again... so I googled the video and changed my route!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leksbronks In reply to Space-in-Time [2011-06-24 00:32:27 +0000 UTC]

That's a pretty good strategy. I've taken on a similar course, taking it a little slow as I notice things like those trigger spots, just not quite as carefully to get them to come out one at a time. I've used the trigger spots a lot when dealing with stalkers, and I imagine as I get closer to the end, that kind of strategy will really help out. I'm really worried about the Ubermorph scenes, though. I have a feeling I will be playing through those quite a few times until I get it right.

I've also found that there are certain spots where they can't come through doors - once you cross the threshold of certain doorways, they turn around and run away. The good thing about this is that you can lure them back out when you step back in, but the bad thing is that once you go back and they start retreating, you can't shoot them - you just waste ammo if you try to. There was one spot during my last round where I tried this strategy, but it didn't work so well because my RIG was red and there were so many of them that when they came back out I couldn't single them out, and they would still manage to gang up on me. I think I spent like 30 minutes just going in and out of that doorway like a retard, and I died anyway.

Och yeah, the Übermorph....He's kinda not the worst part. I remember after the eyepoke-machine I had a strategy that went like:

1. I tore the lid of the hacking thing off, then stasis/dismembered him, hacked the console and then stasised him again. Then I filled up the statsis, its just to the right of the exit door... and ran!

2. My basic strategy was to keep moving, even walking, so that I could kinesis grab the item boxes and smash them on the wall (as not to waste ammo). Mr. Über never caught up with me... I don't think he'll come unless you actually stop, or something like that.

3. In the room where you have to wait for the elevator, you really need to stasis and kill all necros (3-4 big ones). I used a force gun, as when it's fully upgraded, it blows apart everything in 1-2 shots! And right at the beginning of that room, those small crawling things come, so you can just sweep them away with one blow. After I finished the necros, I always pushed the elevator and stood with the back against the elevator, to automatically back into it when it opened. Thus, if Über came I could just stasis him.

4. Then comes the room where you have to pull that corpse over to the laser beams... I just killed the one puker that is originally in the room, went up an kinesised the corpsea and threw it over to the door. Über always comes here, but you just stasis and dismember him, and then run, the door should be open and you don't need to anything else. All the necros in that room were like "hey what about us??"

After that you just run, stasis, run, kill a necro... etc. I forced myself not to pick up much ammo lying on the sides, I just ran through it all... After a few runs, I it wasn't even hard anymore, as the necros are VERY predictable in this part of the game.

I remember when I played the Brute tunnel on the ishimura... I hadn't saved and my rig was as red as it could be! Horrifying, but with a fully upgraded seeker rifle and stasis I managed to drag Isaac to a savepoint. That's luck!

I think my favorite line so far (now that I've heard quite a few of them a million times) is when Isaac's talking to Daina, and she tells him about them jamming the signal, and a gunship nearby - and he's all like, "Now what? Change of plans?" The way he said it, he sounded like he was all gung-ho like a cartoon character, it was funny as hell (different version from the demo, where he sounded a bit more serious, I wonder why they decided to change it).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leksbronks In reply to TheRoguez [2011-06-04 21:36:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've been seeing the solar array a lot myself, now. I think the most dragging thing about that is that long and winding loop around it to get all those crates. I had planted a save game too soon the first time I played it through too, so I started over and managed to bump my first one up a few more chapters. Then I got to the first part of chapter 7 and saved just before shutting down ANTI, and now I'm trying to make it all the way to the end of chatper 15 in order to make my last save game as close to the Marker as possible. I know it only gets harder and harder from here on out, so I am going to need to be patient.

The one good thing about the game play is that it is always the same every time, so if you play it enough times through, you eventually memorize it and it becomes easier to at least get up to the point where you died last time. Then you just hope you can make it through new territoriy enough to memorize that, so when you ultimately die, you can work your way back up to that spot again, and just keep going from there.
