Description Do the marble eyes
shed golden tears
for the fallen heroes
of the days of old?

Zeus and Hera dance joyfully,
captured in immortal stone
in the flawless courtyard
surrounded by steel apocalypses.

Athena, off by herself,
guards the child
who has lost herself
in the treacherous city.

The courtyard, a hidden sanctuary,
watches the child as she cries.
Hera’s emerald heart breaks
and she runs to the child.

But Zeus grows angry,
demands Hera’s return.
His ruby eyes shimmer horribly
as Hera disobeys.

He storms down from the pedestal,
splashing the fountain water
as he maliciously crawls toward Hera
and the whimpering child.

Hera cradles the child in her arms,
certain that Zeus will not strike her
with a crying youth in her embrace.
But wise Athena saw the murder in his eyes.

Screaming, Hera shields the child
from Zeus’s unholy rage.
Athena closes her mighty eyes
and leaps into the blow.

The shattered marble lay on the cobblestone.
Hera looks up, mortally fearful of what she may see.
Zeus, missing a hand, drifts into the sky,
and the child weeps for crumbled Athena.
