Description
An actor during the “battle of Bourtange” reenactment.
During the Eighty Years' War the Spanish conquered the fortress "Bourtange". The fortress was a very important place to own, if you owned the fortress you had a great tactical advantage. It is located between Germany (that’s where all the supplies came from) and the county’s capital Groningen (a place the Spanish really want to conquer)
In 1640 the Dutch soldiers decided it was time to claim their fortress back! What followed was a mighty battle, with the Dutch soldiers being outnumbered and the Spanish soldiers having a huge advantage in the fortress.
But after several days the Dutch soldiers claimed their priced fortress and drove the Spanish away!
The war eventually ended in 1648 and Bourtange stayed a fortress until 1851. After that it became a regular village (that just happened to be in a fortress). Every other year the battle is reenacted to celebrate our history! It’s a huge event with volunteers from all over Europe! And of course I’m also present taking pictures of the whole thing. As you may have noticed, I’m a huge history lover and an event like this is a real treat
