Description *beldolor was ignoring me, convinced that tacos were in fact better than my babbling about leather.

So I certainly showed her, and while she frolicked through fields of tacodom, I played with a bunch of my tools and poof.

Wet leather scans wickedly o.O

Why did I do one side in bg bevel, and the other in flat bevel? Because I got bored and switched tools. This took me, like, half an hour. Spontaneity.

I don't understand how you did it (did you flatten parts of the leather with your hammer....?) but I really admire the design and the fact that its different from other deviations

haha, you should see some of the stuff my boyfriend makes. Not exactly wallets but more of spiked leather armor. He used to sell gauntlets and braclets and the such but now supplies are getting more expensive he says. Well nevertheless, my point being he's thinking about getting a tooling kit and this reminded me that im the one thats supposed to get it for him. lol!

*grins* I make wallets and small things...what got me started in it is that Dad is in the SCA and made his own fighting armor. I was more interested in the artsy-fartsy part though, he liked making stuff. We make a good team. My grandmother trains her Dobie in Schutzhund (police aggression doggies, German) and we make harnesses and leashes and collars and the like for her Shutzhund group. They squee with happiness. *confetti*

Lenalis In reply to kickass-peanut [2004-05-07 22:36:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I do take leatherworking commissions on small thing slike clutches and wallets. However, I'm in the process of moving at the moment and can't take any new projects till things settle down. Come November if school and work allow me time for more than sleep, I will take on new commissions.

Holy crap - I wanna do that. So, you did this by hammering something into the leather? 'Cause this looks awesome, all the scales down the neck, the overall motif... :3 Jeylous.

*chuckles warmly at her misinterpretation* Ah...um, my daddy used to do leatherworking for armor, but by the time I started living with him, he hadn't for a few years, and I've been here three years since that. Long story short though, I wanted to do something for my boyfriend's birthday, asked dad if there was someplace I could get a custom made guitar strap for him, and dad said I should just make one. So I ended up with a slab of cowhide, a few practice scraps, and in a couple hours that night, I had the hang of most of the tools and played with them. My first project was the leather phoenix, here in my gallery, the second being the strap, for his birthday. But it didn't take me long to make sense of the mechanics.

Sorry again for my confusion

Lenalis In reply to zarathus [2004-02-22 03:48:45 +0000 UTC]

Yes you should. You must. Cowhide is therapeutic. I actually had no intention of doing something so elaborate ^^ See the topright pattern? I was playing with one of my tools and said "Hey, that'd look neat on something serpentine..." and poof.

Really, it went poof, just like that. Poof.

this is so cool...i wish i had even the slightest concept of how you did that! tacos pfft, whatever, leather working is so cool!!! I guess you can't do the same thing on suede can you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lenalis In reply to roseofaurora [2004-02-22 01:33:36 +0000 UTC]

I've never tried...but I have some scraps I might play with later. It's so much thinner and softer...I don't know how it'd hold any shape...and I don't know how it acts when it's wet. Guess I'll find out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

roseofaurora In reply to Lenalis [2004-02-22 04:29:40 +0000 UTC]

yeah thats kind of what i thought, but still its worth a shot, wont know till ya try! but either way, the leather stuff looks good already so its not like you need to branch out! but good luck anyways!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lenalis In reply to caughtintherain58 [2004-02-21 23:58:47 +0000 UTC]

The color of the leather is only what you see there in the middle, where it has dried. I scanned it while it was still wet. About 20 different tools went into the creation of this hehe. Just cowhide and time.

SpudMuffin [2004-02-21 23:33:54 +0000 UTC]

Ass-kick-o-nometry. That's pretty sweet. I haven't seen a whole lot of stuff done on leather before. You could make some really neat jackets with decals like this over them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lenalis In reply to SpudMuffin [2004-02-22 00:01:41 +0000 UTC]

I'm currently selling wallets and small things because supplies are really expensive I would do jackets and stuff, but I don't have the cash to make that kind of investment, so I do little commissions for the moment.
