Karen's ranch has a large herd of various pokemon which include Nidorinos, Nidorinas, Ponyta and numerous others. Leon was an egg found amongst the herd and was partly cared for by Karen and her father to ensure the egg had a good chance of coming to term. Karen was present when Leon hatched and was shocked to see the unique coloration of him. She played a part in his early childhood so Leon is used to human contact and less 'aggressive and violent' as most Nidorinos are described, though if anyone does anything to his trainer he is the first to strike in defense. To Leon, Karen is like a surrogate mother or aunt, and while he is independant he will fight anyone (even those well above his experience) to make sure she is safe. His stubborness in battle will keep him standing even if on the verge of fainting. Leon is actually Karen's unofficial starter. With other Pokemon, Leon shows a mild dislike for strangers, often ignoring for the most part or telling them to back off lest they wish to test his temper.

Trivia: Leon is Karen's unofficial starter pokemon and a shiny Nidorino hatched on her ranch. Leon was made an official member of her team after Karen's father decided to send her on delivery trips and other errands while he stayed on the ranch. Leon is able to use a psychic move (Confusion) which begs to wonder if his father was perhaps a wild Girafarig...
