Hello! I am afraid I am not taking commissions on pern dragons at this time.

Do you have a similar pattern for use? <3 She's amazing, and I'm a Pern fan too! My favorites are blues and greens. I've never seen another Pern plush and love the way you did her!

Aw, she's so cute! Much more huggable than my plush firelizards. I'm still working on the pattern, to get them to balance on shoulders...
And also, yay someone finally made the tail right! I see so many Pernese dragons with spade tails... it's a peeve of mine XD
Really though, I wish I could do that. The tail's the hardest part for me.

Hmmm I wasn't aware that this had even happened. Thank you for informing me about this. It's a bit confusing really, since we see people selling commission work for peoples pern dragon characters. I wonder if they got permission or what?
In either case I will be investigating this.

The other thing I'd add is that there is a difference between limited, small-scale sales and mass productions. You'd probably be able to get away with selling a couple of these on Etsy, if it was a very limited run of the product. But you wouldn't be able to mass produce them, and you wouldn't be able to turn enough of a profit that it could be construed as compromising the McCaffreys' profits.
Pern rights have been tricky for a decade, ever since they got tied up in the video game and a potential TV show/movie. Some people made some really, really shitty decisions with how those rights were bought and sold, and untangling the details will probably take many more years. For that reason, the McCaffreys have always been sensitive about their intellectual property, particularly as regarding Pern.
They relaxed most of their restrictions on fandom several years ago, but you always have to be careful when money is involved. :>

This makes more sense, and would explain why say people can commission artwork of a character of theres? Though the whole fanart commission thing is a bit confusing to me. Because technically the fan characters themselves are copyrighted to their makers, and the art would be done of those. But there still in the pern world and happened to say be from a fanmade rpg of the world. It seems a bit sticky really.
I think I read too that with the Teresa firelizards she was going to be more 'mass selling' them or some such?

Cavatica In reply to LeoEyes [2011-12-07 20:56:47 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, she was selling quite a lot of them, which is, I think, how it came to the McCaffreys' attention in the first place.

Cavatica In reply to LeoEyes [2011-12-07 19:56:10 +0000 UTC]
I think fanart commissions are a little bit different. You're selling your skill, not a derivative work. So, for example, you could pay me $30 to do a painting and say "I want it to be of my fandom character," but I couldn't create a website that sells illustrations directly from the novels.
Teresa Mossberg was claiming that her firelizards were approved and licensed by the McCaffreys, which turned out to be untrue. A guy named Steve Austin, of Austin Leatherworks, also ran afoul of Anne's lawyers when he got limited permission to sell Pern-inspired goods, but began producing more stuff than he had the rights to sell. Lawyers got involved and it was very public and messy (Exhibit A: [link] ).
For that reason, a lot of people sell "shoulder dragons," but not "firelizards." Intellectual property is a thorny issue and it's always best to handle it with discretion. If you're unsure, ask!

haha, yeah, I'd imagine so. I own a cool store-boguht dragon plush I might be able to reference to get some idea of a pattern. But it definitely doesn't look easy!

LeoEyes In reply to Negai-Boshi [2011-12-07 04:45:49 +0000 UTC]
That'd would certainly be a good start, another one would be to do a search for dragon patterns, as well as like cats and dogs/wolves. To get an idea how the 'pieces' fit to form the 3d plush.
