Formerly the Free States of America, the American Commonwealth is a nation founded following the outcome of the 1860 US election, which saw the Democratic ticket of Breckinridge and Douglass narrowly defeat the Republican ticket of Lincoln and Hamlin. While the South was satiated by what they saw as open endorsement of slavery by the nation, the abolitionists felt the situation an abomination. By 1862 the situation was considered untenable, with Massachusetts declaring her links to the Union null and void the day after Christmas that year. The rest of New England was soon to follow, with the Midwest, New York and Pennsylvania following shortly after. While initially the militia forces of the North struggled against the professional Southern armies, 1866 saw the intervention of Britain and France on the side of the abolitionists, decisively turning the war in their favor. 1867 saw the conclusion of the war with the Treaty of Philadelphia, which legitimized the Northern secessionists as the Free States of America (Later renamed the Commonwealth of America).

The flag itself has gone through several evolutions, initially being a simple red cross on a blue field. The Flag Ordinance of 1870 saw the flag take its current form, with the 13 stars of the original colonies set around a larger star, representing the new direction of the nation. The red cross on white heralds to the nation's origins in New England secession, as well as the idea that the American Commonwealth's struggle against slavery being a holy one.
