The use of colour in this painting reflects it's composition, and directs the viewer with clear intent. Almost all the warm colours are applied with a vertical orientation, emphasising them as distinct from the cool colours, which are applied in a horizontal manner. These horizontal and vertical lines evoke stability, and thus stillness or calmness.
By contrast the sky is dominated by many diagonal strokes, which indicate movement and instability. This accent creates a sense of movement that is tempered by stability, giving a sense of calm and steady motion. The viewer's eyes follow this pattern, moving in a slow and circuitous manner, reinforcing the central intent of this painting.
The movement of the river towards the centre, only to connect with the sky, reverses it's context, leading the viewer to follow the sky up and around, returning the viewer to the bottom right of the composition. This aspect further reinforces the sense of slow and continual motion in the image.
