One of the best proposals for an Iberian Union I have seen, because personally I don't like those featuring red, yellow, green and sometimes purple altogether. Really imaginative.

it is nice although I kinda miss the shield

The shield would depend if it was a republic or a monarchy (and, then, the ruling house).

Hey isn't that the Carlist symbol?
π: 0 β©: 1
Leoninia In reply to DemonResurrect427 [2014-04-01 03:00:57 +0000 UTC]
Among other things, yes, it's a Carlist symbol. But it wasn't always the case: initially, it was used by the troops that combated the Carlism. And it's still present in Spanish royal arms, so it's a standing Spanish symbol.

House of Burgundy is the founding house of Kingdom of Portugal (1139) and had been Counts of Portugal since 1093, inherited the Crown of Castile and Leon in 1126 (i.e. centuries before the Spanish reunification), the crown of Galicia in 1111, etc. The Kingdom of Spain was unified by House of TrastΓ‘mara, a illegitimate cadet line of House of Burgundy. The Burgundy cross is a Spanish national symbol since 16th century.

I suppose "your Burgundy" is the former duchy, right? I like the ancient coat of arms of it (bendy yellow and blue, with red bordure). Working out the bordure, you can even obtain a good flag, in my opinion.

But Capetian coat of arms only appears on the coat of arms of Touraine (Burgundy modern), while Burgundy ancien is much simpler (bandΓ© d'or et d'azurΒ Γ la bordure de gueules).

Ennio444 In reply to Leoninia [2014-06-01 11:13:07 +0000 UTC]
Burgundy "ancien" is also Capetian. The Capetian scion that formed the first Dukes of Burgundy when Robert of France and his brother Henry quarreled over the Duchy and Robert got Burgundy as hereditary fief (an appanage of sorts).
The Capetians of Burgundy knew that the old Kings of Burgundy had pals or bands as their ensign, so they used the motiff with Capetian colors, azure and gold. So, in a way, the Burgundy ancienne is also Capetian.
As for the Cross of Burgundy as an ensign for Spain, it doesn't relate to the House of Burgundy that inherited Portugal and Castille (which lost its Burgundian cultural air very quickly, and was the older House of Burgundy, pre-Capetian) but to Philip the Handsome and Charles V in the XVth Century.
Sorry if you were aware already, I just thought it would be good to clear these things out.
As for the Iberian Union flag, I like it. It's a nice take on a monarchic Iberian Union, as opposed to the more common "slap a green hoist band on the Spanish flag" thing you see all the time.

If you look at discussion, I never said Burgundy "ancien" isn't Capetian, but that it's simpler than Capetian coat of arms (the semΓ©-de-lys). About the Toison d'Or, it's just one more link between Burgundy and Spain, and the most curious is that it was created as tribute to a Portuguese princess.
Anyway, I appreciate your comment.

I like much your design. I have seen many possible flags of an Iberian Union, but your idea is the best, because this flag recovers the origins of the Kingdoms of Spain and Portugal. And the colors also are correct because the white is a common color in both flags, and the red and the blue represent to both parts of the Union: Spain and Portugal. And these colors are very common in the European flags. Very good result, congratulations.

Β I can understand these colours, and an Iberian union might be on the way (along with a neo-Roman union later on) if anything to pool wealth and success, especially to counter the northern-eastern powers, just like the olden days of the first union. Good colours, as well.

The idea of an Iberian Union, even if only in a cultural aspect, is atemporal. If "those days" means the last 150, 200 years, or more, yes . But I have to admit that the creation of European Union gave a big help on spreading the idea.

In my humple opinion, Francoism, Salazarism and Spanish and Portuguese monarchic movements are/were stumbling blocks to iberism, so it was a "forbidden" theme for much time, and keep being for some people.

Well maybe red, green, purple, yellow XD you know... but, in this case, I know that there is historical roots for the specific colours you choose. Is just I didn't feel like colours that would fit nowadays, so you flag is still valid per se.
