My half of an art trade with the talented Sean Pendleton , depicting one of his characters, ‘Marvel’.

In all honesty, I don’t actually know that much about Marvel other than what I’ve seen in Sean’s artworks, but from what I could tell, he seemed to be quite a deep, dramatic character (heh, don’t tell me ‘Masked Marvel’ isn’t a dramatic name). I could also tell that he was a superhero of sorts, whose actions were the result of a major loss in his life. In Sean’s own words:

‘He lost his best friend. She was the only person he could confide in. She was the only person he could get close to. If he could've only saved her, she could've been the only person he could've loved. That's all behind him though. Now her death drives him to save people who can't save themselves. In his heart though, he truly does it for her memory, for if he doesn't try, her death was meaningless.’

I was under strict instructions not to imitate Sean’s style, to truly work in my own, so, I thought I would use this as an opportunity to experiment. At first I thought about doing something with a dark and moody theme (reflecting the background story behind the character)… something kind of depressive, but in the end, opted to instead do something a little more ‘action packed’. The resulting image has a certain comic character feel to it, which I rather like, although it’s still pretty loose and rough compared to some of my other digital pieces.
