Character Study: Ariel
From: Walt Disney’s The Little Mermaid (1989)
Original Character Designers: Glen Keane and Mark Henn

The beginning of the great Disney Animation Renascence, The Little Mermaid saved Disney Animation Studios from obscurity. It also established the standardized Broadway-Style story structure, with the song sequences serving as the tent-poles of the film, that is still used to this day. It was also the last animated feature to have its cells hand painted. Not to get into the over one million hand drawn bubbles.

This was also a character request by my father. He asked for art of Ariel, to replace, and I quote, “Utterly horrible, and ugly mermaid art,” my mother purchased at a craft show. I was hesitant to replace something my mother purchased from a local artist, but then I saw them.
