Description The 60s future: flying stuff, cities on the moon, shopping, hell yeah Maybe this is the future we would have had if we didn't blow all our money going to war all those times Based on photos of the 1964 World's Fair, which looked pretty awesome to me. As usually, the dudes were my idea.

The pendulum always swings between aesthetic
considerations. My favorite futurism is the stuff that
came before the 40s when there was more whimsy
and less science

Any favorites in particular?

Two I read were "At the Earth's core" and "Pellucidar". I read a couple of the Tarzan books too. I've got a whole bunch of Burroughs on my shelves, including a lot of the the Mars and Venus books which I'll get round to one day.

I still need to get into the Pellucidar series The Mars ones are my favorite and I only read the first Venus one but it was pretty darn good. "The Moon Maid" was also pretty worthwhile

And where were you in 1964?  You probably weren't even born yet.  I was a freshman in high school learning new things.

leothefox In reply to ackapella [2015-01-21 14:43:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, my dad was 7 and my mom was 6, so I missed out.
But in 1995 I saw Goldfinger and got myself a 60s obsession

What ever became of the Worlds Fair? I went to the one in New York in 64 . You are right about the war spending, how different the world could be now. The private sector will never replace government funding of research and development, we are at a standstill in so many areas. Fund death and destruction , always, fund research and development to benefit mankind, not so much.

leothefox In reply to ebbing-gale [2015-01-13 06:49:10 +0000 UTC]

That's what I'd like to know. I never got a chance to go to one
Yeah, we only seem to get better at hurting each other. My friend read a study
that brokedown the various space exploration things that could have been
funded with the money from the Iraq war alone, and it was pretty staggering!

Eeeps how'd I wind up doing that? I'd much rather read William Burroughs than William Gibson

Lol... sorry... I think the color is what did it for me.

What's wrong with Gibson? (Although I agree that he doesn't hold a candle to Burroughs.)

I just can't read "hard" sci-fi, I'm more of a science-fantasy guy. Retro-future is a lot of fun too

DaisukeAlexandria [2015-01-10 14:12:13 +0000 UTC]

I agree wholeheartedly! If humanity spent its time on spiritual evolution and technological advances ONLY and NOT killing each other, we'd be a thriving species possibly spanning multiple worlds.

However, that's just me....that's just me!

That's true! That's the reason I read Edgar Rice Burroughs: wonderful escapism!

Yes! Reason why I write like I do...to escape this reality. I'm rereading A Different Child now for fun.
